Ford Motors, a popular name in the global automotive market has been working on electric vehicle development for quite a while now. Reports indicate that the upcoming model will be named as Model E. The upcoming model will compete against the likes of Tesla Model 3 and the Chevrolet Bolt. Expected to begin production in 2019, the affordable all-electric car will have a 200-mile range.
Ford Motors has been making considerable investments and investing time for research which will help them deliver more safer, convenient and reliable cars in the future. Along with the electric car, the American automaker is also working on introducing fully autonomous vehicles for commercial operations. Expected to be introduced in 2021, these vehicles will be used in ride hailing and ridesharing services. To make this a reality, the company is also doubling up its sales team in Silicon Valley and more than doubling the Palo Alto campus. To help with autonomous vehicle development, the company is also investing and collaborating with four startups.
The Model E naming convention was Tesla Motors Elon Musk’s first choice for their new vehicle, however, Ford having owned the trademark, the former had to opt for the Model 3. At a later date, Tesla Motors plans to launch the Model Y, which will help the company complete the ‘S3XY’ lineup which they have been longing for some time now. Reports also indicate that the Ford’s Model E will be available as a crossover as well as a car, and be offered as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicle.
More details about the Model E will be known in the coming days. Chevrolet’s Bolt will be launched later this year, while the Tesla’s Model 3 will be launched in 2017. Though Ford may get its new Model E in 2019, the vehicle will have to get loads of interesting features to make it a strong competitor in the all-electric vehicle segment.
