Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) started the construction of a Rs 4, 500 crore plant in Chennai on June 6. This massive plant will be able to churn out four lakh units a year when fully operational in 2010. RNAIPL is a fifty-fifty joint venture by Renault and Nissan to manufacture passenger cars for export as well as the local market.
The success of the Logan has made Renault sit up and take notice of the Indian market. Even though they are tight-lipped about future launches and only convey that they are still assessing the market, the Sandero seems most likely to be here by 2009. This hatchback will be along the lines of the Skoda Fabia and the keenly awaited Honda Jazz . From the Nissan stable the Micra seems to be on its way to India. The Micra is a small two-door urban vehicle, similar to the Fiat 500 and Mini. It will be competitively priced at close to Rs 7 lakh. The Nissan Murano, a crossover SUV, also looks poised to arrive as a CBU in early 2010. The Nissan-Renault alliance penned in 1999 has been looking to broaden horizons with manufacturing units all over the world using the strengths of all the companies involved in the alliance, which are Nissan and Infiniti for the Nissan group, and Renault, Dacia and Samsung for the Renault group.
