Volvo S90 debuts at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show

Volvo has finally unveiled the much-anticipated S90 sedan at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show. The 2017 model of the carmaker's new flagship model has made its global debut at the event. 

The 2017 S90 boasts of an appealing and modern design. The fascia sports the brand’s signature 'Thor’s Hammer'-shaped headlamps and Iron Mark front grille. These are the two styling traits borrowed from the second-gen XC90. The concave grille and the overall design language is inspired by the bigger SUV as well. Similar is the case in the cabin. It gets the semi-autonomous drive Pilot Assist and the IntelliSafe Assist as standard equipment. The latter tech includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert. Apart from this there is an animal detection feature, which is claimed to offer "intuitive warning and brake support".

Engine options for the entry-level S90 include the 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor in two states of tune. The one in the D4 churns out 187bhp of power and 400Nm of torque, while in the D5 this mill produces 231bhp of power and 480Nm of torque. There is also a T6 variant that comes powered by a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol unit. This powerplant belts out 315bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. However, the top-of-the-line S90 is the T8 trim (401bhp) that shares its plug-in hybrid with the XC90.

The Volvo XC90 enjoyed a good demand in the US with about 88,000 pre-orders of the car received by the Swedish carmaker last year. The new S90 is expected to replicate this success for the manufacturer. It competes with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-Series.
