The current Volkswagen Polo has been a decent success globally for the German automaker giving it the numbers it has been searching for. However, it is not resting on its laurels and heavily testing the next generation of its B-segment hatchback. Spotted this time around is the high performance GTi variant and that too on the famed Nurburgring racetrack.
As is the case with the current car, this next-generation Polo GTi gets all the standard fitments of the stock car but with larger wheels, fancier interiors and obviously the hallmark GTi badging at the front and rear. This new car moves to the MQB platform which means it will share many components with other newer VW models in the range.
We believe that it will be offered with the new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine when it is launched sometime in 2018. This is a new engine and replaces the 1.8-litre unit that had been a mainstay in cars like the Octavia and the Audi A4.
A 2018 launch means we are unlikely to see this future hot hatchback before the middle of 2019 by which time there is a high possibility of local assembly. For now, we will get the current Polo GTi later this year. It was showcased at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo.
