Next-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class spotted on test

Mercedes-Benz is actively working on the development of an all-new generation of the E-Class, as seen in these latest spy photographs. Spotted with a lot less camouflage than before, this new model will replace the current E-Class that has been around for nearly five years.

While the forthcoming E-Class will be marginally bigger in size than the current model, it will be lighter than the latter thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in the car’s Modular Rear Architecture platform. The new E-Class is expected to have a longer wheelbase, which will be translated into improved rear passenger space.

Since the E-Class also serves as a base for the sportier CLS four-door coupe, Mercedes could also be developing the third-generation of the latter alongside the new E.

The engine line-up for the next-gen E-Class is likely to include new three and four-cylinder engines, although our sources indicate that Mercedes could bring back straight six engines. As for the AMG-spec model, Mercedes will introduce the familiar 4-litre, twin turbo V8 in the next E63 AMG. Like in the current model, the next-gen E63 AMG will feature all-wheel drive as an option and a more powerful E63 AMG S version.

With the current generation E-Class being in the market since 2010, albeit with a major facelift, this all-new generation of the E-Class is expected make its global debut early next year.
