Toyota unveils new GD series of turbodiesel engines

Toyota has unveiled a new GD family of turbocharged diesel engines at the Vienna Motor Symposium 2015. These engines are successors of the KD series of oil burners and will power the new Innova, Fortuner and Hilux pick-up trucks. 

The new 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV and the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV engines will take over from the 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV and 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV engines, and feature common rail diesel technology and a variable geometry turbocharger. While the 2.8-litre engine is rated at 177bhp and 450Nm of torque, the 2.4-litre unit is good for 160bhp and 400Nm of torque. 

These engines have been developed to work in conjunction with the six-speed automatic gearbox as well as the five-speed manual gearbox. Besides the Innova, Fortuner and the Hilux, the engines are also expected to be employed in the Landcruiser Prado, in different states of tune. 

Earlier reports had suggested Toyota was planning to launch the new Innova and the Fortuner in India with a range of newly developed engines, before the end of this year. By revealing these new engines, the Japanese manufacturer has given us a distinct idea of what we can expect from these new cars.
