2016 BMW X1 tests at Nurburgring with minimal camouflage

The next generation BMW X1 has returned to the Nurburgring for further testing much ahead of its September unveiling. Based on Mini’s UKL 1 platform, the new X1 will be drastically different from the current model with the transverse engine and front-wheel based AWD set up.

Developed under the code name F48, the new car is the second generation of the entry-level SUV from BMW. The X1 has moved away from the estate-like silhouette and now bears a resemblance to the conventional SUVs like the X3 and X5. With the range of three-cylinder and four-cylinder transverse engines powering the car, BMW has used the opportunity to shorten the bonnet and thereby increase both the cabin and boot space.

The engine options will include a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine developing 134bhp and 220Nm of torque, 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit developing 189bhp and 270Nm of torque and 2.0-litre diesel motor developing 180bhp and 380Nm of torque. All the cars will use the six-speed AT transmission from the Minis and will power either the front wheels or all four wheels.

The new X1 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and go on sale in Europe before the end of the year. BMW will not take too long to launch this model in India; it will go on sale as a CKD by the end of the next financial year with a marginal premium over the current X1.
