A test mule of Mercedes-Benz GL-Class facelift was spied somewhere in Scandinavia. The GL-Class facelift is expected to be launched sometime in 2015 and according to rumours might be renamed GLS. The prototype was spied wearing minimal camouflage and was apparently undergoing cold weather testing.
Originally introduced in 2006, the second-generation model of the big SUV wearing the three-pointed star was launched in 2012. Mercedes plans to give it a facelift before the third-generation model is introduced in 2017.
As is evident from the spy pictures it seems like there will be minor revisions to the front/rear bumpers, headlights and tail lamps. As subtle as the changes might seem on the outside, it might be the same story when you step inside the cabin as well. However rumours indicate that there might be a luxurious Maybach variant, this gives scope for contemplation that a few interior bits might be used in the standard variants as well.
Currently, the GL is available with an option of five engines and two transmission choices. In India, the regular model is available only in a diesel variant (GL 350 CDI) powered by a 3.0-litre, V6 engine mated to a 7-speed auto box. There is also an AMG-spec model (GL63 AMG) with a 550bhp V8 engine mated to a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission.
Mercedes might unveil the GLS at the NAIAS Motor Show in 2015; It might be priced marginally more than the current model. We expect it to arrive in India the same year and as of now we eagerly await the Maybach variant.
