Maruti Suzuki will increase production of the AMT gearbox to 5,000 units per month

Maruti Suzuki has tasted quite a bit of success with their cars equipped with the AMT transmission. The high demand for these cars has made the manufacturer increase the production of AMT vehicles to 5,000 units per month.

At present Maruti has a capacity of 3,500 cars per month and reports say that the carmaker is in talks with the supplier to increase this number to 5,000 per month for the next two months at least. The Celerio that was first introduced with the AMT gearbox is facing an acute demand in the Indian market. In addition, the launch of the new Alto K10 equipped with AMT next month, makes it inevitable for the company to ramp up the capacity of AMT gearboxes.

Currently, Magneti Marelli caters to the demand of Maruti Suzuki for the AMT gearboxes. It is the same company that supplies the AMT kits to Tata Motors for the newly launched compact sedan- the Zest.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio's AMT variant constitutes 35-40 per cent of the total Celerio sales. This high demand has resulted in the waiting period extending to about four months for this vehicle. The company seems to have gauged the situation and aims to ease the long waiting period for the AMT cars.
