Jaguar reportedly readying a new, lighter F-Type

If a recent report from Auto Express is to be believed, Jaguar could be developing a new lighter version of its two-door sports car – the F-Type. The British carmaker is said to be taking help from its newly formed Special Vehicle Operations division (SVO) for the development of this upcoming model.

According to the report, the new F-Type could make use of the highly advanced powertrain technology from Jaguar’s C-X75 hypercar. Interestingly, powertrain consist of a 1.6-litre supercharged and turbocharged engine which produces 500bhp and revs up to 10,000rpm.

“We designed that engine for a £1million supercar, so it’s extremely expensive. But it could work well. Who can say where we’ll go in the future? The world is downsizing with high-pressure engines. In the longer term, we won’t be using 5.0-litre V8s.” says Paul Newson, director of JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division.

In the past, the Special Vehicle Operations division has developed the 567bhp F-Type Project 7 which weighs 80kg less than the standard F-Type roadster. They are also working on the upcoming Range Rover Sport SVR and a few other special edition versions based on JLR’s existing range of cars.  

With all the big names in the industry going green by relying heavily on hybrid power-train technology and aerodynamic efficiency, a lightened and more efficient F-Type is certainly the way to go.
