BMW i8 with laser lights delivered to customers

BMW has delivered the initial versions of the new i8 sports car before the expected time. The Bavarian car maker, by doing this, has become the first manufacturer in the world to sell a production car with laser powered head lights.

In an exclusive event held in Munich on June 5, 2014 the first eight i8 customers were handed over their keys. These owners are also the first eight to possess a car equipped with laser lights.

The technology was shown earlier this year and BMW planned to launch it by August. However, it seems like BMW board decided that they will launch it before anyone else, as Audi had earlier announced that the R8 LMX (equipped with laser lights) will go on sale in summer this year.

The laser-boost technology, in the i8 can increase the range of the throw as much as 600 metres more than the standard LED headlamps.  It can also double up the distance covered by the basic high beams consuming 30 percent less energy than power-saving LEDs, take up less space inside the headlight casing and are lighter.

The lights are supported by a camera-aided adaptive system sense that detects on-coming traffic and adjusts the range and direction of illumination to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers. The system is advanced to respond to steering movements and directs the light as much as possible in the direction of travel.

BMW is yet to make an official announcement on launching the BMW i8 in India, however, the chances are bleak. But, the German car maker had the i8 on display at the 2014 Auto Expo.
