Mahindra’s test mule spotted; is it the new Bolero?

A Mahindra vehicle has been spied testing near the company’s R&D centre in Chennai by an automotive blog. So is it the S101? No. The Scorpio facelift? No. It is a different vehicle altogether. In the spy pictures the test mule is seen with no rear bumper and a steel box on the tail gate. We think, it’s the all-new Bolero.

The side profile reveals a big boxy SUV with a rather small bonnet, and a XUV 500 inspired front fascia. The rear spy pictures also show the propeller shaft indicating that it could be built on a ladder frame chassis. The wheelbase is surprisingly longer, indicating at greater space inside, but the vehicle does seem a little short on length raising speculations about an under four-metre Bolero. But, that is not possible as it will also warrant an engine capacity not exceeding 1.5-litres. This won’t be apt for an SUV meant to work hard in the rural areas. . 

The Bolero was introduced in 2000 and 14 years later has been thriving on facelifts. There hasn’t been a major design change but it got a few engines upgrade over the years. The Bolero is also the best-selling SUV in the Mahindra stable and even though it has been a steady seller the company has been secretly working on an all-new Bolero.
