It was one of the greatest and most prized of all Ferrari road racing cars - the 1964 250 LM Berlinetta and now the beautiful car has been auctioned off at RM Auction, in association with Sotheby’s, in New York for a whopping USD 14.3 million. The amount makes it the third most expensive Ferrari ever to be sold at an auction.
The model on offer - chassis 6107, a mid-rear engined car, was part of a limited edition of 32 units. It features a Pininfarina body design with coachwork by Scaglietti. This model in particular is the 24th unit. Its racing history is also one that needs a mention. At the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona it finished first in its class and eighth overall. It is also famous for being the last Ferrari to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1965 (the car which achieved that was different).
Apart from this car at the RM Auctions event two more cars found new owners for more than USD 5 million - a unique 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS (USD 7.1 million) and a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT SWB (USD 7 million).
Alain Squindo, Vice President, RM Auctions, had said, “The 6107 represents the pinnacle of 1960s vintage Ferrari collecting, combining rarity, beautiful design and a legitimate racing pedigree. Only a select number of cars can claim both originality and important race history, and of this group, few rarely come up for public sale, elevating the significance of this auction.”
