The Indian government is in the process of framing a ‘mandatory recall policy’ for motorcycles and cars with manufacturing defects or technical faults. This comes after General Motors recalled 1.14 lakh Chevrolet Taveras (largest vehicle recall in India) after detecting emissions issues in the engine.
The authorities have asked the Automotive Research Association of Indian (ARAI) to form provisions for vehicle recalls on various safety and technical parameters. Many other companies like Ford, Nissan and Honda have recalled their vehicles in the past but the massive Tavera recall was a wake-up call for the government to have a policy in place.
"There has been a need to broaden the perspective of recall to bring in best global practices, followed in the US, Europe or Japan. We have asked ARAI to develop a standard recall policy for all vehicles that would be framed under the relevant motor vehicles rules and enforced. There is need for a mechanism to plug loopholes in the system. A clear policy would define the scope and give more teeth to the government agencies for stricter compliance in automotive manufacturing," said Ambuj Sharma, additional secretary, Ministry of heavy industries.
