We have always loved the fast, light and extremely green Caterham cars for the simple reason that they are simple and incredibly fun to drive. Wanting to continue this trend in a modern way but stay true to its roots, Caterham has unveiled the AeroSeven Concept car at the 2013 Singapore Grand Prix.
This is the first closed wheel car unveiled by the British origin Malaysian owned manufacturer since 1994 and is part of their expansion plan for the next few years. The passengers sit closer towards the rear axle and get a view of the road ahead just above a long bonnet. Derived from a classic design, the AeroSeven is made entirely from Carbon Fibre and weighs just 650kgs.
It is powered by a 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine that produces 239PS and has been mated to a six-speed manual. This explosive combination gives the AeroSeven a power to weight ratio of 395PS per tonne and a 0-100kmph of four-seconds. For the first time, Caterham is also offering a variety of electronic aids like ABS and variable traction control.
The interiors are very to-the-point as this car has been built for a single purpose; to go very fast. It two racing buckets, six point harness and an F1-style all functions on the steering and a centrally mounted high resolution display to provide various bits of information about the car.
Caterham’s are cost effective track tools and since we don’t have a strong racing culture here, especially with regard to the weekend driver, it will be a long time before we get something like the Aeroseven in India.
