We had recently reported about GM India temporarily stopping production of the Sail sedan and hatchback diesel variants along with the Tavera BS III. GM India has launched an investigation to track the issue and hopes to rectify the problem and recommence production by July 1.
The halt in production was the result of an inspection by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) on the BS3 diesel engined Tavera. The investigation is believed to have revealed that the mill failed to comply with the current emission norms. In the Sail sedan ignition problems were discovered in the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre common-rail diesel engine in the Sail saloon and hatch.
Avtech, manufacturers of the BSIII engine powering the Tavara has published a statement affirming that the issue was not caused by the engine but by some sub components provided by other tier 1 suppliers. Fiat India, who supplies the same 1.3-litre engine to Maruti-Suzuki and Tata, claimed that they have not received similar complaints from any other auto manufacturer using the 1.3-litr Multijet Engine.
In order to maintain market needs, GMI has increased the production capacity of its BS-IV Tavera. The company uses the same 1.3-litre engine for the Enjoy MPV as well. But the production of the MPV stays unaffected.
