CNG OR LPG??? WHICH IS BETTER

Hi,

Before going for Conversion just look at this. First, why do we go for conversion??? Probable answer is, For saving on fuel cost. Petrol price is around Rs 50/litre in Delhi. So on spending Rs 100 you get 2 litres of petrol and considering avg mileage of 14km/litre, you get 28 km in 2 litres of petrol or Rs 3.57/km.

Now with LPG: Per Litre cost of LPG: Rs.35

If a car gives a mileage of 14km/ltre with petrol(as taken above), it wil give around 11.5 km /LITRE with LPG.

So on Spending Rs 100 you get 2.8 litre LPG, which runs around 32 km, so running cost comes to be Rs 3.12 /km

So on LPG You save Rs 3.57-3.12=Re0.45( 45 paise)  ON EVERY Km you drive.

So if you drive daily aroud 80 KM , you save around Rs 36 daily when compared to petrol.

Can anyone give me similar sort of calculations for CNG????

Hi,

I have got the figures for CNG:

CNG PRICE: Rs 18/ Kg

If a car gives mileage of 14/litre with petrol it shall give around 16.5 with 1kg CNG.

So running Cost with CNG =Rs 1.1/km

And as Shown above:

Running Cost with Petrol =Rs3.57/km

Running Cost with LPG= Rs3.12/KM

I hope these are correct figures. Can anybody confirm

I guess, the figures you showed are correct.
Taking it a little further.

Saving per kilometer (from petrol to CNG) = 3.57 - 1.1 = 2.47 rs.
Cost of CNG installation ~ 35000 Rs.

This means, you actually start saving after 35000 / 2.47 = 15000 kms.
Not bad.

To take this forward - I heard a driver mention (and I don't have a car - planning to buy one) that a CNG kit often needs to be replaced once a year or so.

Is that correct? Any experiences on how long a CNG kit can last (after which one would have to throw it away and buy a new one) and at what kind of maintenance cost?

No, you don't need to change CNG (or LPG kit) every year. The longevity is good enough to serve - with normal maintenance from time to time.

By the way, on the discussion above (LPG vs CNG), I would briefly state.... CNG reduces performance/pick-up by 20-25% while LPG reduces by 10%-15%.  In LPG, the mileage reduces while in CNG it increases - for instance, if the car gives a mileage of 12 on petrol, it will give 10 on LPG & 14 on CNG (approxmate figures).  However, all these vary a little from car to car & depending upon the LPG/CNG Kit, Retrofittment quality (workmanship) & maintenance.

Confusion...

if CNG is better in terms of mileage than n is available cheap n also is going waste from the drilling of gas wells (as its the lightest form of it) than y auto companies r not designing the CNG models of the car in which the company itself gives it preinstalled just like Maruti's Duo models???

Ne Idea?

Hi,

I recently bough Chevrolet Spark. Is it advisable to get a CNG kit fitted to it. Spark has a 1000cc engine. Also I have to travel around 80Km daily ( 24 days a month). Can some body advise me on this? I know running Cost on CNG is Rs1.1/km and that on Petrol or Lpg stands beteween Rs 3- 3.7 per km. But I am worried about the power loss after fitment of CNG kIT. Will the AC BE effective enough along with the CNG kit on spark(1000cc). Please advice.

CNG Retrofittment will not affect the effectiveness of AC - it will remain the same.  CNG, like I have said earlier (post #5), will reduce the engine performance/pick-up by 20-25%.

Do u mean to say that a 1000cc spark will change into 800cc maruti 800 with CNG Kit fitment. When AC is On in maruti 800, max speed is limited. Please reply is it advisable to fit a cng kit in spark

Yes, there's loss of performance/power.  It is felt more in smaller cars.  Therefore, CNG is generally preferred in bigger / more powerful cars.  For small cars, LPG is more adisable, as loss of performance/power is to the extent of 10-15%.

Please read my post #5 (2nd para).
