Online bookings have gained momentum with requests coming in from almost every nook and corner of India. Mr Tufail Khan, Vice-President, Marketing of the online car portal Carwale.com (which offers an opportunity to book the Nano), said about 6,500 bookings were facilitated by the portal. It has also received booking requests from 430 cities in the last four days.

Industry experts, too, were reluctant to put a finger on the total bookings on Day One, as Nano can be booked through financial institutions, retail outlets and a portal, www.carwale.com. Of the approximately 5,000 Nanos (excluding banks and retail outlets) that were booked in Mumbai, around 300 were booked online and others through dealers.

The used car market is slowing down and the Nano isn't the only reason. Prices have come down as much as 30% compared to last year. Dealers attribute this to the increase in supply of used cars because of rising loan defaults and attractive discounts being offered by automakers on new vehicles.
