I have owned an Alto and then a WagonR till I decided to buy this new sedan from - “Hyundai Verna”. I have always been very apprehensive about Hyundai cars (or shud I say biased for Japanese cars). When I decided to upgrade to a sedan, I had the Aveo in my mind, for its pure majestic build and looks. Since I was upgrading too soon to sedan (third car in three years), I had to be very careful in choosing the car as I plan not to change for next 5 years..... I test drove Indigo(Diesel), Aveo, Fiesta, City and Verna (in that order). I must say Aveo has only good looks. The interiors although good has poor quality. The chrome finish on the door handle was shaking when I sat inside a brand new car. It was the same in all other Aveos. GM's quality..... Fiesta was good. But I felt the steering was very heavy and the back seat was too low and cramped. There are too many Fiestas on road already. Wanted something new.... The most appreciated Honda City ZX Exi was tested next. It surely has an "Upmarket style". But it is way too expensive for a mid segment. The Exi model comes with nothing. No music system, No speakers, no height adjustable seats, no tinted glasses, no keyless entry. The power on the car was not great for highway drives. I had to press the accelerator to the floor on lower gears to get past city buses with four people on board.... Now, the Verna Xi.... It was love at first sight for me, my wife and my friend. We fell in love instantly with the looks of the car. The car looks ordinary from the front. But looks great from the side (egg shell shape) and from the rear. A definite score over the Aveo and City. Fiesta looks equally good from the rear and the side. The interiors are cool and roomy. The wood finish on the Xi & XXi models are attractive. The dashboard is not very exciting, though. It looks decent. The information console is good with nice speedometer and tachometer and the digital display of Odo, door open sign, seat belt warning etc… (similar to most other cars in the segment). The rear leg room is excellent, second only to the Honda city. Now the drive.... the diesel was mind blowing (way too expensive for me as it is not equipped well). The petrol was very refined. Very silent inside the cabin. Did reasonably well with 5 people on board and AC on in Bangalore city. Guess, would do well on highways too. The feedback from the various auto magazines has been average. I think that does not matter for common man as I feel the common man has different requirements.... The Xi and XXi comes with lot of features at the price. It has height adjustable driver seats, height adjustable seat belts, music system (XXi only), speakers, electrically adjustable RVM, Alloy wheels (XXi) and automatic climate control (XXi). It is a real steal at 7.35 lacs (Xi) and 8.01 lacs (XXi) Practically..... I have been using Verna Xi for last 15 days. For a person who has been driving WagonR, it feels definitely very good in a bigger car like Verna. However, there are few things which I feel Hyundai should have looked into. The initial pickup is not good at all, head lights are not the brightest. The fuel efficiency is not great either. Otherwise, it is excellent. Looks great on the road, handles the rough roads smoothly, accomodates 5 people without any cramps, AC is decent, driving position is the best, road clearance is superb, ground clearance is good, seats are comfortable, easily reachable controls, excellent styling..... Overall, with a little compromise on fuel efficiency, it is a fantastic car.VFM, Refinement, SpaceFuel Efficiency, Initial Pickup

I purchased the Hyundai Verna CRDI SX one month back in August 2007 with a view and assurance given by the dealer for an average of 25Km/Ltr on highways & 20Km/Ltr in local. The company published ads in the news papers & other media claiming the average to be 32.8Km/Ltr under ideal conditions & that convinced me the average told by the dealer to be correct . After driving the car even after 2000Km and regular check up with the dealer  I am able to get a mileage of  max. 14Km/Ltr on highways & 10Km/Ltr in the local. I would not recomend this car to anyone if you are impressed by thr company claimed mileage of 32.8Km/Ltr. It is recommended to take a test drive and check the mileage personally before purchasing.
Fuel economy is very poor as claimed it is just 14Km/Ltr on highways.Interiors are ok need no changes

In one word this is a great car. I bought it before SX4 was launched and hence feel for the additional features in SX4 (Specially Air Bag and leather option). The cabin is very silent and driving is such a pleasure! Extremely good performance on higways. Drive on big potholes and you will know the difference- You will feel minimum jerk.

Things which could have been better-

      1. The Fully Automatic Temperature Control will most of the time turn the ventilation mode ON and you get a lovely smell of outside smoke and garbage. If you change the mode to circulation, the Automatic mode does not work. The service station people does not seem to be knowledgeable enough to answer!

      2. The car wants first gear for speed less than 20 kmph.

      3. The music system does not have any option for external system connection or bluetooth.

      4. In your second free service, you will have to pay around Rs1400 for oil filter etc. Strange!!

      Regards

When you buy a what are the important things you should consider?

      1) Design: Check if it's aerodynamic or a rectangular box. Design with more drag coefficient means you eventually going to burn more fuel.

      2) Engine, gearbox and power: This is where your 60% of money is going to be invested. Engine should be enough powerful to pull car's own weight without any effort. Gears should run engine at it's sweet spot providing good speed.

      3) Suspension, sitting comfort, steering control: Gives stability over road, 30% of your money is going to be invested here. Body should not roll.

4)Interior Gadgets: Electronics, technology fades by time, what's new today will get old tomorrow. Even though you don't have CD player, It's not going to impact performance of your car. Race / Rally cars don't have such things, still they perform. Just 10% of your money is going here.

Exterior Very good if you look from distance. If you are a person who really thinks that after spending 9 odd lacs you should get a good product definitely you will give a close look at every other corner of the car. Ok.. here things start changing.

Check the space underneath the headlamp, did you find it unequal? Ask the sales person about it and they will say they saw it for the first time. :). Try to put slight pressure on the bumper under the headlamps and it will bend because it's bad quality plastic. With my small finger I was able to push the bumper. Now start checking the lines, cuts of side view mirror and you will find they are not properly finished. Try to see the logo on the boot space. 1.6 and SX both are not on one linear plane.

Strange! a company expecting to sell a product in 9 lacs should have taken care of these things. Even if you like to buy a cell phone of 20K you will see the quality/finish and may reject it if it's not good. Come on, this is 9.4 Lac car, give some finishing. What's big deal in today's technology to put these things in proper way when computers and robots are assembling cars. Where is the perfection Hyundai ? You are competing against world in this segment.

Still! all points above do not stop anyone buying this car because it has got a very good design and no one checks in this microscopic way on the street.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Let see interior.. check the door handle and small lock knob, you will find it's made up of a black plastic which is coated by silver / shiny chrome color. After few years its going to be black where you put your fingers quite often to open the door.

Next to the gear shifter, beige color plastic is just over there. Its not fixed or glued to black plastic running underneath. Steering is not telescopic like i20 so people with good height will feel steering touching their legs. Rear space is not much. I agree I am not in a limo, but I just need 2 inch more space. If ladies and kids are going to sit at back, its fine in such case. In Korea, people are of short height so this can work over there but when Hyundai is selling this car over the world, designer can avg the available space.

Looking for Gadgets? Too many, You name and it's there. Good work Hyundai. This matters to many people and all cons gets under shadow after getting list of gadgets in this car. But do remember, just 10% of your money is going to be invested in these gadgets.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Check the specs, WOW, 265 lb torque, 128 Hp.. great. Wait, 265 lb torque when turbo starts, without turbo its 168.064. So when does turbo starts? Papers say its around 1700-1900. Let's test it. Put this car in second gear, 1000 RPM, speed 20 Km per hour and floor the gas paddle and start counting, 1...2....3..4 ok so at 3000 RPM you get a kick. So here at 3000 RPM turbo charger starts working. But why this happened? Why the car was struggling for those 4 seconds? Its because Turbo charger did not kick in till 1800 RPM and later it was pumping air inside 4 cylinders. For 4 seconds 40-60 ml of Diesel was getting pumped in Cylinders but lack of properly compressed air did not burn the fuel. So whats big deal in this? Ok...40-60 ml Diesel wasted without giving the power.

So this car is for those who handle car very softly. It's for those who accelerate slowly. This practise will give good mileage which this car is promising on paper. Ok So when you are in hilly areas, make sure sure you keep your RPM above 2500 by downshifting at right engine speed.

So final words, not happy at all with an engine of 1.6 L, 128 HP and 265 lb torque.

Ride Quality & Handling Good. Very good suspension for city. Humps, path holes, all are absorbed properly. I am not comparing this car with BMW , AUDI, but yes in this price, it's good. Body roll? It's there. Heavy body when suspended over spring becomes pendulum. Soft suspension may not feel good when you take a turn over speed of 120-130. Steering, good and soft. If you feel you need a feedback, remove power steering :). Yes, I love steering which is smooth, I don't call it dead, it's just smooth.

If I cannot handle a soft steering I will learn it. I have flown aircraft and I have driven Mahindra Jeep too. Aircraft is more sensitive but I learned how to U turn it at speed of 400 Kmph. (yes, I learnt flying on piston engine ). I drove Mahindra jeep with awesome feed back which need strength to handle it, but I learnt it.

So final words, handling over high speed may not be great but it's acceptable.

Final Words A very good car for someone who likes design without looking the flaws in finishing. I never spoke regarding design defects, I spoke regarding the build quality of stuff used to create the car based on the design that car designers gave. If you are in a city where in traffic's sudden stop and sudden starts are common, you can trust on the brakes, you can trust on 1st gear (because it easily runs engine at 2000 RPM at speed of 10kmph, which helps turbo charger to pump in some air to burn Diesel), but yes don't try to push car hard on 2nd, 3rd gear, it's not worth. You will end up loosing some ml of Diesel or get humming inside the car. If you want to showcase gadgets inside the car, this car is for you.

Areas of improvement Turbo charger needs performance improvement. Quality of stuff used should get some improvement.

PS: If you feel you need more power, get after market turbo charger. If still you are unhappy, modify / hack the ECU to get 20-30% performance boost.

      Hi,

I have purchased Verna VGT CRDI on 1st Feb .

From first service (1200 KM) onward I am facing following problem in vehicle
      1)    Performance problem: Vehicle feels pathetic acceleration at high speed and start vibration and noice. And it’s unable to cross 160 KMH mark which can be easily done by any other less powerful competitor like Ford Feasta, Accent CRDI and even by Indigo. This also feels in gear shift. If we change gears as per user manual provided along with vehicle , then it become unmovable and engine starts heavy vibration and sounds BURR BURR … its turbo charger gets in effect only if engine RPM cross 2200.
If AC is switch ON then performance become more pathetic.

      2)    Mileage problem
In city driving its stretch up to 12 KMPL without AC and on highway it goes up to 16 KMPL without AC as a speed of 120 KMH.

At speed of 80 it gives good mileage app 20 but as speed is increased average goes of drastically .
@80 KMH on Highway without AC : 20 KMPL
@100 KMH on Highway without AC : 17 KMPL
@120-140 KMH on Highway without AC : 14 KMPL

I don’t know how it will perform in summer with AC ON

      3)    Low visibility on night driving:
Headlight is not enough for night driving. And things are only visible for few yards

      4)    Stability Issue at high speed
Again hat high speed vehicle becomes unstable and tries to go off-road in either direction.

      5)    Brake Oil Leakage:
After 5000 KM running its brake oil light indicator starts glowing. I have approached workshop they said its master cinder have problem and they replace it.

After 9-10 visits to workshop my problem remains same.

It has been almost 6 months since I bought  a Verna CRDI. It has covered over 10000 kms now. To put it simply, it is a great car for the pure driving pleasure it gives. Although a bit shaky at high speeds in excess of 120 kmph, it is smooth and feels solid otherwise.

I'm getting 15 kmpl consistently in City driving conditions, mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear. In highways, I've got around 18-19 kmpl. Overall, it is a good car and the numbers on the road tell it.

Excellent power, Good mileage, Value for moneySuspension not that good

Well its only been close to 6 months since i got my Verna. Being a 2nd year BBM student, this was a very prestigious car to go to college and i jsut loved it for its styling and big car feel and looks.
Brilliant diesel performance! Could hardly find any turbo lag. Once you get to 1800 RPM it just rockets ahead! It was so much fun watching the lancer cedia disappear in my rear view mirror! Althought the engine was quite noisy in the initial phase, it is now pretty quiet. Swithc on the A/C and music system and its as good as a petrol car!
I havnt had any major problem with the car till now. The only thing that was not up to expectations was the seat fabric. The texture is rough and it also tends to get dirty quite easily. But this apart, its a wonderful car.
I have driven it only for 4000 kms the mileage is about 12-13 in the city with the AC on all the time. This figure is satisfactory although i do tend to drive a bit harsh. And taking into consideration Bangalore's traffic, this isnt a surprise.

If u r thinking Fiesta or Verna, Verna its got to be! The only thing the fiesta is better at is in the mileage department. But this apart, nothing in it comes close to Verna. Same in the case of SX4( so boring....!)

      An all round  winner.
Mind blowing turbocharger!!! Great styling and interiors. No airbags, and no leather option. Gear ratios are a bit difficult to live with in the city.

This is a miracle car. i wud say best in the segment. you will forget skoda when you will drive it. it competes with laura. driving diesel verna, you cannot judge its a diesel car. hyundai has not left any con in this car. all are pros. average is 15+ local with ac and on highways its 20+ with ac. i have skoda too, but i feel this is better than skoda. its great torque of 24 kgm and 110 bhp makes it the fastest car of the segment and even of upper segmentsGreat pick up, great looks, cool interior, good mileageNot found any yet

Exterior Simply amazing! The car has a very strong appeal and is surely a head-turner. The contours are very well defined and is a real treat to the eyes. The fog lamps with the boomerang design and the headlights similar to eagle eyes simply stand out. The bumper however is a little fragile and may even crack at the slightest of impact.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) The car has all the features to have you smiling. The reverse camera, bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted controls are wonderful add-ons to the car. The reverse camera works extremely well and can perfectly guide you to where you park your car. Bluetooth conncectivity also works quite well and the voice is clear and audible to both the speaker and the listener. The look and feel is also classy as it has a touch of both wood and chrome. The biege and black interiors give a plush look to the interiors.

Audio system is simple yet quite effective. Sound quality is crystal clear when playing the CD/USB.

Leg space is quite adequate both for the front seats and the back seat. The only downside is the inadequate underthigh support for the back seats as the seats are quite small and also uncomfortable for long drives. Also, it may be a little inconvenient for someone sitting in the middle back seat as it has a slight bulge.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Read quite a few reviews on the gear box not being good. However,i did not find any such issues. The gear box is quite smooth and for someone who has driven the i20 and i10, will not find much difference while driving the verna.

Switching to the reverse gear is different unlike other cars. In verna, the driver has to press a button and move the gear upward to put it to the reverse gear.

The engine quietly revs up when you hit the pedal to the metal. The drive is quite smooth and would simply love taking the car on long drives on the highways.

The car gives a mileage of 11-13 kmpl. However since my average driving is around 18 km per day, a full tank can last close to a month.

Ride Quality & Handling Ride quality is fantastic and all these years i have been an avid hyundai fan. My first car was a santro xing. Thereafter upgraded to i10, i20 and now verna. Never had any issue either with the engine or with the servicing. Main reason why i am not tempted to move to any other brands and wish to remain a loyalist.

An area of improvement can be the rear suspension. The car can get a little wobbly when driven on high speeds and when it hits a pothole. The suspension is a little too soft for comfort. Hyundai can improve on this and probably give it a more sturdy feet.

Final Words  There are quite a few other choices available in the market. Verna surely has competition from SX4, ford fiesta, vento and ofcourse Honda. For anybody looking to buy a car in this segment should do a test drive of all the choices and then only decide. Again  opinion may vary, but what made we go for the verna was its external appeal and interior features which I found wanting in all other models.

The mileage for all other cars may be slightly better than verna. However as stated above,  never had any issues with any of the earlier hyundai cars, hence making a decision was not really difficult.

Areas of improvement Back Seat, quality bumper and the rear suspension are the areas where hyundai can improve.

Exterior Looks, Build in features.Low seating, front bumper

      Exterior It's good.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Good enough.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Worst, worst and the worst. It's been only 3 months i got a new brand car and my car is there at their showroom since the very day. The gear gets locked anytime and you can meet with an accident anytime as i could get. I sent my new brand car to the company four times for the repair. I mean a new brand car is such like. They got two cylinders which were not working and 1 spring in clutch that was dead, So now you can imagine the conditon of car. And now the company is not at all serious regarding this. Right now they are ignoring my complain but now i am going to file a case to consumer court. I mean just imagine a brand new car is at the company since the first day. and even do let me disclose the fact of their delivery, they assure for 3 months like they did with me but i got after 6 months and 7 days. I have always been a Toyota fan but this time i tried to change it but Toyota is Toyota. No doubt.

Ride Quality & Handling Worst worst and the worst.

Final Words I am not supposed to put any thing more i'll just file the case now.

      Areas of improvement Everywhere.

Just pump and show. The parts that compnay has used. The services that company has provided. They really harass us.
