The new CR-V follows Honda's habit of making a completely new-looking replacement; the new model looks as different from the current model as the current one does from its predecessor. It looks far more European and a lot less quirky, which is sure to widen its appeal. The 2.4-litre petrol engine has been axed from the lineup and will do duty only in the Accord saloon. The 2.0-litre that was limited to only the 2WD CR-V is the petrol engine that will power all but the diesel variants of this SUV. It is now available in a single state of tune, 153bhp and 192Nm, which will power both the 2WD and AWD petrol variants. Both the manual and automatic gearboxes are five-speed transmissions; this sounds a little behind the times when one considers that most premium brands are offering from six to eight-speed transmissions on current models. There is also happily a diesel engine option, the same 2.2-litre i-DTEC that powers the Accord. However, just as with the Accord, Honda will not bring the diesel to India.

The diesel CR-V is built in the UK, so importing it from there will immediately put them at a cost disadvantage. Secondly, the number of CR-Vs that will get sold will not justify the investment required to sell and service what is essentially an all-new product.

Honda will keep selling the CR-V because it is their flagship model, so expect the petrol to make it to the Indian market next. The launch isn't too far away; we expect it to retain its lead in the premium petrol SUV segment.
