Honda has had a 2.2-litre four cylinder diesel for a few years now in its lineup. It powers the CR-V and the Accord in Europe. As with any of Honda's other powerplants, it has been built to high standards and has even garnered an award or two along the way. Honda has even tested the Accord and CR-V diesels in India as long ago as 2009 to judge if they will run okay in our conditions. Again, they have proven that they can run under our harsh conditions.
However, Honda is being realistic, and launching the Accord diesel will not offer profit to the company. The investment involved will not be recovered by the number of Accord diesels that the company will manage to sell in India. In this light, we don't expect the Accord diesel to make its debut here unless something drastic happens in terms of the fuel subsidies.
For the record, the Honda Accord diesel's competitors are the Skoda Superb diesel, the Volkswagen Passat, the BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 and Volvo S60.
