Guys,

There is a possibility of me moving from Hyderabad to Bangalore. Incase I move just needed a few clarifications in terms of my vehicle movement.

1. If I don't want to change my regn number & willing to pay only road tax. How is this tax  calculated?

2. What are the pros & cons related to changing the regn number?

3. Is it necessary to get an NOC done from the RTA here in Hyderabad before I move? I know its done only incase you want to re-register your car in the new state.  Is it better/safer to opt for an NOC?

My vehicle details are as below -

  • Make - Ford Fiesta Zxi 1.6
  • Cost - 7 lakhs on road Hyderbad
  • Manufacture date - March 2009

Hope the above details will suffice to caluclate the road tax. Looking for your comments on my other points too.

Thanks, Subin

Hi Subin. The answers:

1. Even if you dont want to change your reg no, the tax applied would be 9% of your invoice price, incase there is no other vehicle registered on your name. If there is already another vehicle registered, it would be 12%. These rates are generally same across the country, but vary a bit. You would be required to check this locally in Banglore. Also, this percentage depends on the age of the car as well...the older the car, the %age decreases. As yours is relatively new car, it would be 9% or 12% (These rates are currently in Hyd atleast)

2. If you are permanently shifting, its always advised to change the reg number. There is no harm till you have the tax paid. Its just that you would be more frequently stopped by Traffic Police due to out side state number.

3. If you are going to stay for more than 60 days anywhere out side your home state where the vehicle has been bought or registered, you need to have an NOC from your home RTO. In case you dont have the same, you are eligible for a hefty fine. And you would be forced to pay the road tax, that would again attract fine to RTO office apart from the fine you pay to traffic police. Even if you want to retain the number of Hyd in Banglore, you need to have the NOC to pay the road tax there. You cannot pay road tax in Banglore without NOC. This is because in actual process, once you pay the road tax in Banglore, the road tax paid in Hyd would be refunded to you on pro-rota basis. However its a very lengthy process and seldom people get it. Most of the times, infact always its the RTO agents who get this money. Hence its always advised to have a NOC before you move out of the state.

Hope this helps.

I think it's 90 days / 3 months.

For NOC Free period? I am not very sure then..I was told as 60 days by a fellow in RTO office. Does it differ again from state to state?

Thanks.

NOC is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. More over, when you enter any state other than the base state of your vehicle, the details of your stay should be declared to the local RTO authority. This can be done in any checkpost/toll plaza while entering a state. Once you do this, carry a copy of this with you so that no cops can catch you. I have done this while entering Pune from Chennai.

I guess Pankaj gave the period for which we do not need NOC and I asked the same query. Else the validity of NOC again depends I think...I had a validity for 6 months from the date of issue for my bike from Bhilai(CG) to Hyderabad. And also for my car from Mumbai to Hyderabad.

Yes, I was referring to the period for which we do not need NOC, i.e. can drive without paying tax etc.  I think it's 3 months (all over).

NOC validity varies - 3 to 6 months - generally it is 3 months (I understand).
