Hi Abhinash,

Frankly speaking there are many routes from Pune to Goa. I will try to put a few of them used normally

1) Pune (NH4) - Kolhapur - Sankeshwar(in Karnataka) - Ajra - Amboli Ghat - Sawantwadi - Mapusa

No nonsense route and the fastest one I can say. NH4 till Sankeshwar so you can cruise 100+ till there. The ghat road is also good. I had taken this route whicle going to Goa.

2) Pune - Kolhapur - Belgaum - NH4A - Panaji

Same as option 1 above. But the ghat road section on NH4a is not very good as per my understanding

3) Pune - Kolhapur - Gaganbawda ghat - Tarele(NH17) - Sawantwadi - Mapusa

I took this route while coming back. The roads are bad in ghat section. Moreover had to cross Kolhapur city in after noon which ate up my time. Not a recommendation

4) Pune - Tamhini Ghat - Mangaon (NH17) - Chiplun - Sawantwadi - Mapusa

A road for enthusiasts. Scenic good roads with lots of twists and turns. A pure joy to ride/drive. But one problem is that being single laned, you have to be extra cautious and maintianing high speeds is a bit difficult. My recommendation only if you wanna enjoy the journey and if you dont wanna hurrry to destination.

Distance wise all are almost same. 450-470km. Time taken by route 1 should be minimum. If you drive non stop with minimal breaks you should reach within 8 hours.

As for required stuff: I dont think so you need to carry food itmes. There are plenty of options for food on the way. But better have your stomachs filled and car's petrol tank filled before you veer of the highway and venture into ghats.

Hi Pushkar,

The 1st route that you have suggested, is the ghat single laned?

Hi Rishita,

Yeah. Ghats in all the options are single laned. "Good" means the road conditions are much better than others. Very less potholes. But as traffic is very sparse, so people do tend to speed in the ghats, especially the tourist cabs. Also there were quite a few settlements in between. So it is also a tad more safer than othersSmile

Besides, while traveling there's no fun if you carry/eat food items from home (get rid of that Wink). Enroute, we should have all that is available Tongue out

Jokes apart, carry some if you have little children.

Hi,

Am planning to go to Goa this december.

The routes through Kolhapur are very usual, so am planning to go via Mahabaleshwar - Poladpur - NH17 - Goa.

Has anybody of you tried this route???

I have no idea of the route.  Hope others post some info.  In the meantime, have a look at this map/route/details

@Harshad : Poladpur route is also a good idea. Just be aware that the Poladpur ghat is very long. So you have to climb the Mahabaleshwar ghat and decend via Poladpur one. The route is very scenic, so it shouldnt matter I guess. Personally I have never been on this route, but this has been my friend's experience.

@Abhishek : Yeah right , the toll booths at NH4 cost a bomb. I dont have an exact idea as to how much because I have done the trip on bike, but the amount should surely be between 400- 500 bucks or maybe a bit more from Mumbai to Belgaum. If you are comfortable with NH17 and have a time in hand, then that's the best way from Mumbai.
