Hi

If there is water there is no diff between new and old car.

Once water come into contact for long periods the rusting starts.

So antirust coating is a must.

Prevention is better than cure

Well, as for the teflon coating, i asked a few 3M dealers (chennai - tenampet & t.nagar). They say that they would first wash the car with soap and then let it dry after which they would use some rubbing component followed by a shine. But when i ask where they use teflon! damn they are clueless! but below are the charges:

Single Quote - 1300 Rs.

Single quote + 2 free quotes ( 3 and 9 months breakup) - 3500 Rs.

I havent seen cars with teflon coating, but no one is willing to give any warranty. wierd! but if the single quote costs 1000 rs., i would surely give it a shot!

Teflon basically gives wet/shiny look.  The same (despite the additional coat/s) wears-off gradually in 2-2.5 years.  The money can be better utilised (anti-rust/under chassis).

Pankaj, there is no actual teflon involved in these things.

the actual process is called car detailing

Quite true.  It's basically paint protection treatments (3M)...

  1. UV protection against fading.
  2. Exterior beautification.
  3. Scratch/swirl removal & surface enhancement

What? No teflon in teflon coating?? Innocent

Then the whole thing is not even worth discussing...

I just serviced my car yesterday, and found that there was an elaborate graphic on the brochure, explaing how the teflon layer prevents scratches from damaging the original paint, and shallow scratches can be got rid of by polishing and levelling off the tefllon layer...

If you say no teflon, then the entire exercise is just a charade! No need to even think about it..!

(Clarification: I just saw the brochure, did not enquire or opt for the teflon coating...)

Krishna, unless this treatment is by DuPont/licensed by it, even using the 'teflon' name is illegal

On paper it is Car Detailing, as stated by you before.  But is referred popularly as teflon coating.

Like we call photo copy as "Xerox", external paint protection treatment is called as "Teflon Coating". Most of the dealers or car decor shops, apply some solution from 3M or some wax and then buff with the machine. I have seen this process myself twice, first on my Scooty and second on my car. It is not worth, if they charge beyond Rs. 500/- because effectiveness or wet look remains only for 2/3 months. After seeing this process, I have started my regular waxing with Turtle wax once in every 2 months. As per my knowledge, Teflon coating can be applied only with some heating process like they do for making frying pans. It is also very difficult to locate independent Du Pont authorised center, as they have mostly authorised dealer service center for their "Paint Re-Finish" for paint works. Please do not fall prey to this Teflon Coating by dealers. Just use good quality wax and do it yourself & save the money.
