Let me reiterate the facts here again – that I have posted elsewhere in carwale.
There is a misconception that strongly prevails among many of us that
“You need to run at least 1000 KMs per month, if you want to decide on a diesel car”
It is not true that if a diesel engine is run for less than so many KMs in a month, the engine will have problems or not perform. There is no such thing from engine technology perspective. This statement is purely a financial calculation based one and not engine technology based one.
The above statement is a kind of thumb rule to use – if you want to decide between a petrol and diesel car of the same make. Typically you spend about 80k to 1L extra for a diesel engine than a petrol engine in India. In that case if you run for about 1000 Kms/month, then you would recover the extra cost of diesel engine approximately in about say 3 years and after that only you start saving in terms of fuel expenses. So as per the thumb rule if your monthly running is more, your recovery of cost will be faster, that is all.
Again this logic can be applied only when you want to decide between petrol or diesel versions of same cars like
Verna – petrol or diesel
Fiesta – petrol or diesel
Linea – petrol or diesel
But typically when we start, we begin with ANHC, SX4, Fiesta, Linea or Verna. Now if you want to decide between SX4/ANHC and Linea/Verna diesel, you just need to see the price difference between the 2 cars that you like from your usage or requirements - say petrol ANHC and diesel Linea. Now when the Linea or Verna diesel is cheaper than ANHC, the above thumb rule should be thrown to wind – because you not only get a diesel car at a cheaper price than ANHC but will also save money from the first month on fuel.
