Hyundai has launched the diesel variant of the i20 with a 1.4-liter CRDI engine. The new engine churns out 90ps at 4000rpm. 22.4 kgm of torque would be available from 1,750-2,750rpm Hyundai claims, which is almost twice the amount of torque of the existing 1.2-liter Kappa engine.

The 1.4 Gamma petrol engine debuts on the i20, but is coupled only to a 4-speed automatic transmission. This engine develops 100ps at 5,000rpm and 13.9kgm torque at 4,200rpm.

Hyundai i20 CRDI

Hyundai i20 Diesel Magna – Rs 6,19,800

Hyundai i20 Diesel Asta — Rs 6,83,431

Hyundai i20 Diesel Asta (O) -Rs 7,20,430

Hyundai i20 Gamma 1.4 Petrol A/T

i20 Asta A/T – Rs 7,31,130

i20 Asta (O) – Rs 7,72,301

We all felt that Honda Jazz is overpriced. But now Hyundai has followed footsteps of Honda Jazz. i20 CRDi Asta on road price in Bangalore will touch 8 lakh while Asta (O) will 8.5 on road in Bangalore. For this price the buyer has choice of Ford Fiesta 1.4 EXi TDCi, Honda Jazz (Active) as well. – A premium petrol hatch back, a fully loaded diesel hatchback and a highly rated diesel sedan will now have same price range -- isn’t this exciting?

Off course other than price, these 3 cars have totally different positioning. However this shows the type of choices available for Indian car buyer. Individual requirement and preferences will now rule the car sale. I can see exciting time ahead for Indian car industry.

The i20 asta is A/T. So the prices are in a way justified. The Jazz is said to be over priced because its for 7lacs+ for a 1.2L engine. The i20 is a diesel and to add to it, it has a 1.4L engine which is very good. Infact for now in diesel hatchs the i20 diesel should rule the roost. The underpowered tag will go probably. i think Maruti should start some serious work on the swift if they intend to sustain the competition from the i20 diesel. Diesel cars are always sold at a price higher than their petrol versions. Moreover a powerful engine justifies the price for the i20.

Yes I agree with the upper thread Jazz is said to be over priced as it is a 1.2L Petrol engine and the i20 1.4L Diesel and  diesels are priced higher!!

What about the FE clamied? (i20 1.4L Diesel)

It is what we think we know already that often prevents us from learning.

The diesel price seems overpriced to me especially when you know that Grande Puntio has been launched with aggresive price. Also Skoda Fabia suddenly seems to be a decent enough bargain and not to forget that VW polo will come up in Jan'09 and Getz crdi is already there.

Its gonna be a hot diesel hatch competition.

Dont mind, Fabia will still be at the bottom of the pile. There is nothing appealing in the car.

It is pretty much evident in the sales figures also.

i20 is priced 30K more than what it should be, but still there is no other hot hatch in India which can produces 90Bhp and 220Nm or torque with a good cabin. Though Getz is around but its very very dated..... Guys what say !!!!

Getz CDRi is having some serious discounts on its price. I would not be surprised if it gets phased out once the i20 diesel establishes itself. Again the Punto has the same 1.3L DDiS while the i20 has a even more powerful 1.4L CRDi. Pricing is definitely bound to get affcted for the extra power. Apart from that the brand names are also to be considered

All said and done, Hyundai i20 hatch back costing almost double 8.5-9lks for the automatic is the price of two indica vista / 1.75 grande punto is saying something about arrogance on the part of hyundai pricing to restrict mass booking considering that they have to deal with over seas market on a priority with 80% of sales being overseas.

There are many who say, so what big deal, look at the features blah blah. But an upgrade in a hatchback segment shouldnt try and enter at over 3-4 lakhs from its basic variant. What next an i20 1.6 with navigation system and digital display at 12 lakhs? Oh primier hatchback...

Hyundai should also have launched an i20 1.2CRDi  with a price range of around 6L on-road to compete with the likes of swift/vista and Punto. though 1.4 CRDi would be good, it proves to be too much for an normal to invest 8L on a Hatch, when he can get a decent sedan in the same price range.
