The fact is Honda brand is too strong in India. In past also Hyundai had tried to put themselves with Honda but failed. Jazz will be purchased by only those who wants snob value. Hyundai lacks it clearly , no doubt about it. Even they can not design their own steering wheel , straight lifting from Honda !! . In stead of following Honda blindly , they should devise their own marketing policy . Again stating Mr Jagdish Khattar - " People are not simply buying engine , but entire car ".

This is my first post on this forum.

After following this thread and acknowledging the thoughts of my fellow members,i would like to share my TD experience of i20 CRDI.I have to admit that i had fallen in love with Grande punto emotion pk diesel but when i drove this car, within a mile or so this car changed my decision and that to,so convincingly. Its pick-up,drive comfort and inner ambiance just mesmerised me.

Punto is not a match to this car(except for ride quality which was slightly better then i20) and in my opnion this car will obviously compete against Punto and not honda jazz.I have read that people feel that i20 is overpriced but one should also consider what he is getting for that extra price-A really refined diesel engine, much better built quality(interior) and space that no other hatch can match in this segment(punto is cramped).

Apart from that one should also consider the after sales service (ASS) and we all know TATA doesn't know a word about it.They treat their own customers so pathetically, how can we expect them to be generous with FIAT customers. Also the CRDI engine promises to be fuel efficient and futuristic as some day everyone would like to move on from that national engine of FIAT.

In the end i would like to conclude that please just TD this vehicle as only then you"ll understand the reason for it being a little expensive(even i acknowledge that !).

Yes Vidhu i read this article ( petrol as well as diesel comparison ). Those seem to be biased simply because by their own yardsticks Jazz must have been winner instead of Ritz in petrol but it was ruled out because of price. So how come i 20 be a winner in diesel segment which is also priced much higher ? Also they have given all specifications regarding external as well as internal which clearly shows that i 20 has least rear leg room !! .

I am not against i 20 . Only thing against it - pricing .

Well i would like to say something about the legroom here. This is my observation:-

My height is 5'9" and when i was driving punto, the legroom was quite sufficient but when i sat on the rear seat with driver's seat in same position in which i was driving it,my knees were touching the driver's seat in an uncomfortable manner, whereas in i20 their was a gap of about 10-12 cm b/w the driver's seat and my knees.

Well what i observed was that legroom has a lot to do with the depth of the driver's as well as rear seats.more the depth, more would one feel the legroom as he"ll get better thigh support as the seats are deep. This largely increases the legroomand also the comfort level specialy at the rear  as in the case of lenia which has very deep seats.

Well for the overprice thing,i figured this out:

GOOD INTERIORS+GOOD BUILT QUALITY

+SPACIOUS+GREAT DIESEL ENGINE

+BRANDNAME+A.S.S= 68000 extra over punto emotion pk.(FOR THE ASTA MODEL)

Afterall piece of mind is priceless and HYUNDAi offers you plenty of it.

For me,i20 scores over punto on all the above feature so spending extra for that shouldn't be a problem.

And for RITZ,i don't think its a premium hatchback,so their is no point in comparing it with i20 or punto.

One reason for which i admire HYUNDAI is that they are one of the few automobile manufacturers who back themselves for designing their own engines rather then acquiring them from others, for their cars. For me MARUTI SUZUKI was in a very strong financial position to develop its own engine for swift or ritz, but they chose the easy way to success.I think they don't belive themselves anymore as manufacturers and for me they have become no more then mere assemblers. What if FIAT stops the production of that "national engine".MARUTI SUZUKI will get wiped out of the automobile market in a flash.

For the price of i20,I know one thing about HYUNDAI.After the launch of a new car, they have this habbit of reducing its price or offering discounts for certain peroid of time.

Even i am waiting for this to happenWink. So all the prospective buyers,my advice would be to wait for 1 or 2 months and you"ll surely get a good deal for i20.

The MJD Engine was developed by Fiat, Suzuki and Chevrolet together. As such, Suzuki also contributed to the development of the Diesel Engine.

Further, Maruti Suzuki ONLY is able to extract the best performance from this Diesel Engine - neither Tata / Fiat.

well said bidhu.....I have always been insisting the members not to go by the millimeter comparison in auto magazines....its always wise to visit a showroom and sit in the rear seats and feel the difference...I strongly propose this as I did the same during my first visit to a hyundai showroom..opened the rear door, sat in the rear seat...fell for it and I own the car now....

One reason for which i admire HYUNDAI is that they are one of the few automobile manufacturers who back themselves for designing their own engines rather then acquiring them from others, for their cars.

Not so at all, the diesel engine in the Accent and the Tornado was built by Bosch.

No manufacturer builds entire engines all by itself-thats a misconception, various systems are build/designed by specialist outfits and branded as the car makers products.

Important sub contractors are Bosch,Delphi etc.

I don't have a problem with who has developed it but with the engine and the cars itself.Apart from Ritz,i don't see any effort from maruti to offer any better package to its indian conterparts.

The biggest regret is that, maruti has become immune to customer wants and a very good example of that is a lack of 1.6/1.9 diesel engine in india where acoording to me its the more suitable option for Sx4.

Its not that i am against maruti. On the contrary,i am probably the biggest admirer of maruti 800 and zen,but now i feel that maruti has started influencing buyers decision by forcing them to buy what they want to sell rather than offering them something better.

I"ll explain it with an example-I admire swift as a great hatchback but everyone knows that their are some problems attached to it like cramped rear space and now i believe that it also requires a revamp. They may increase the price accordingly and same for SX4.I was hugely disappointed when i almost waited for 1.5 yrs for them to come up with the diesel variant but they did not.Now i don't understand why can't they be more sensitive to public/buyers needs instead of using their brand name for influencing the buyers desicion to go for petrol instead of diesel.Sometimes i feel, they treat us like "INDIANS" and this is not a very good feeling. They have been such a trust worthy brand for all these years but now they should offer us something better and something extra for what we are paying them-Simply because only maruti is in a position to do so!

ALL I WANT TO SAY IS THAT-"WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREATER RESPONSIBILITY".

AND I WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND THIS AND STOP TAKING THEIR POSITION FOR GRANTED.

I AM SORRY,IF I HAVE HURT ANYONE'S SENTIMENTS,I HAD NO INTENTION OF THAT.

THIS IS ONLY A PROJECTION OF MY SUBJECTIVE THINKING AS I DON'T WANT AND EXPECT MARUTI TO MUSCLE ITSELF IN THE NAME OF BRAND NAME LIKE HONDA.

Vidhu.. Here is my view on this discussion...

If you study Indian Car market .. it is taking its time to mature & certainly its maturing quite well. We started with Premier Padmini & Ambessedor...At that point of time every one fall in love with Maruti 800 & Van for its Floor gear , 1 key etc etc...I still remembering taking a ride in one of the Indians greatest Industrialist's ( I cant give a name here) white 800DX, since my father was known to him  & his driver said Yh gadi Saheb KHUD chalte hai.....& since then not only Maruti but all the car mfcturs has up graded & prepaired Indian market to own a bigger & better car...BTW if you remember  what happaned to Rover2000???? which was here before our market was ready for it & it just could not do well...

Every car maker puts in lot of effeort/men power & money to get each model out. I my slef is NOT A MARUTI FAN , but the fact is that even in todays market with enough of compition around , you find their product in every segment which is giving tough compition to all its rivals....Every company is following soem stratagy first to survive & later to increse product base... I am sure once the first is been taken care later will always follow...

if you compair the number of modle launched in last 10 years , break it in to 2 of 5 years each , you will realise that we are growing...so pls give some time...  I believe that car company will lauch all their model in India along with other parts of the world in next 5 to 7 years...& you will not have to wait fo any Engine/car size to choose for....Smile
