I think its the "we're not interested in the local market, we're more than happy with exports" syndrome.

I think it is a desperate effort on part of Hyundai India to position themselves with Honda & Skoda . May history will repeat again . By no means they are comparable or even closer to Honda or Skoda .

Same attitude what Honda is showing with the Jazz in the name of premium hatch back. But the attitude is just that, we dont want to really sell in India even though we are manufacturing the cars here, we want to export as much as possible and make more foreign currency. Currently 80% of all i20 production are being exported and only 20% is offered to Indian customers at around 40 cars a month per showroom or something like that.

So its clearly just a strategy to please the manufacturing regulatory needs (if any) who dictate that Indian manufactured cars should be made available in the local market to see that they are offering it here, just that there is lesser demands would be their story. Since these variants have already been available in the oversea markets for sometime now and manufactured in INDIA, so making it available to the Indian market was definitely not a great undertaking for Hyundai, they just had to take a turn from the sending it to the shipping port and send it to the launch venue.

But pricing could have definitely meant, they were serious about serving the Indian market after all they are using Indian man power. Im not saying, dont export, but please dont sell it at the exact same price at which it is available in UK. We dont earn in pounds now do we?

I also believe they wanted to distance the i20 much higher up from the i10, so that people who were looking to buy the higher end of the i10 dont shift to i20 instead. Whatever the strategy, its definitely not consumer friendly or jazzy either. Cars with strong brand names like Skoda and Fiat are having a tough time, i dont think Hyundai can even stand a chance. They should learn from their Elantra, Verna and once famous Sonata's price debacles as people dont aspire to put their live's earnings into a hyundai.

I had booked a i20 1.2 and was hoping the i20 1.4 AT would be within a 1.2 lk to 1.4 lk range for me to get my hands on. But im so disappointed as its cross the 8 mark which is almost 3 lakhs more than the base i20 and 2 lakh over the 1.2 asta manual its really pricey for hatches, i may just go ahead and cancel my Hyundai aspiration all together. When you know they are not serious about serving you, why should we run after them.

Too bad Frown i20 1.4 CRDi Asta was my pick. After hearing it being priced at Rs. 683431 (Ex-Showroom) I am not very comfortable.

Why not?  They are the world's #5 carmaker ahead of Honda and several others...

They need to move out of the 'economy' tag and move upwards, but NOT IN THIS MANNER!

The product is definitely 'premium', but what can justify a price tag thats alarmingly close to the D segment for a hatch?

Hi Steeroid, It is fact that Hyundai has failed to positioned itself in premium segment in India , no matter whether they are leader in world market or not. They must accept the reality . In India they are known for Santro & i10 only. All other cars were big failure.

Prices are high, but not as high as they are of Jazz, considering i20 is a diesel & Jazz is a petrol.

but I am not happy with i20 1.4 CRDi 's pricing aswell.

It is what we think we know already that often prevents us from learning.

In my perspective, the key message from the Hyundai pricing is basic Magna version is for customer looking for VFM factors. The Asta and Asta (O) model is for those who demand the best features from their cars and are willing to pay for it

They have actually created a new segment where in you get 6 airbags and sunroof in a Hatchback car.

These features are available only in premium segment cars (except Skoda Fabia). But now one can avail these features with in 8 lakh range.

Hyundai have gone on record stating that they have produced 72,000+ units of the i20 since its launch at the end of December 2008, of which 60,000 were exported.

You could therefore extrapolate and say that they've sold 12,000 i20s in the domestic market during the last 6 months, which works out to about 2,000 per month.

Given the volume of exports and the success of the model in Europe, its not surprising that they're more interested in exports than in the domestic market.
