Well no, not survival of the fittest - just a stupid race of one-upmanship.

Guys...while talking of going for brighter headlamps, have you considered people/drivers coming from opposite direction? I have raised this point 2-3 times earlier in this forum (in other threads) but no one has commented/replied/agreed/disagreed with it.

People, this is not some stupid rant - I face this everytime I drive at night. Many times have I considered upgrading to the brightest lamps available...but then stop short thinking that its not going to help things. Not to mention the tiring effect it has on my eyes (and in most probability everyone else's).

Rohit,

Very nice write-up. I share your feelings, I am also a staunch supporter of ideas like yours.

Many-a-times, (when I was not having a car) when I have travelled at night, I have always cursed people with such stupidly bright glaring lights.YellIt's really very dangerous for people in the opposite lane. God knows when they will see reason & stop using such illumination...Come on guys, you can opt for other things to do up your car, but atleast don't jeopardise others' lives...

Rishita, the point is that people will not see reason until stopped on the road and asked to see their own cars from others' perspective. And I have a feeling that having glaring lights has less to do with visibility or usefulness of it and more to do with ego/showoff/making a statement/etc. Owning a car itself is a big boost to one's ego - and if its a new car the owner would want all the very best of things in it - hence the lights, in addition to other (safer) things like interior, ICE, alloys, extra fenders, all sorts of jug-mug and so on...I don't want to generalise - each to his own...everyone has a right to get the very best in their cars...but one should not go overboard at least in some things in the interest of others.

For those who use ultra-bright lights (for whatever reason, be it visibility, making a statement, whatever) just park your car with the headlights ON and move a few metres away in the opposite direction in the other lane and look at your car's lights - it is highly probable that you will find it blinding: You cannot see the road properly, people crossing the road from front of your vehicle will appear as ghostly shadows (and this is worsened at speed or when there are no/dim streetlights). Imagine running over someone just because you could not see him (or saw him but it was too late to brake as you were too close) due to the blinding light from the opposite car. Who's to blame? The other car driver for having blindingly bright lights or you for failing to see the person crossing the road?

totally support you here. Infact sometimes it causes the eyes to go blind for a few seconds after the other vehicles have passed. You are not able to see anything on the road at all. I have slowed down many times due to this. Moreover many cars come with High beam in the city where you already have street lights. People do not even know the basic difference as to when the high beam is supposed to be used and when the low beam is supposed to be used. Even the normal head lamps cause problem when the cars come with a high beam in city traffic. Tends to get irritating at times.

Centaur, the problem is compounded by the fact that there are no regulations for this - or enforcement of the same. I have never seen anyone get pulled up by traffic cops for having blindingly bright lights.

In Mumbai and Pune halogen lamps(also known as white light) are actually banned. They are not allowed to have them on their cars or bikes. Previously I had seen many people getting pulled up but these days i dont see that many. Maybe with time the law has gone down the drain as there is no proper enforcement.

Yeah, agree with you. In fact I remember once that a car behind me actually was coming with a high beam - focussing straight onto my face from the rear view mirror creating the same problem as from an opposite car. I got down and asked the guy to turn off the beam which he thankfully did.

well, you would face the problem with the reflection even from the ORVM

This will be resolved only if people start driving a bit more responsibly and sensibly while having consideration for others on the road.
