Guys...while talking of going for brighter headlamps, have you considered people/drivers coming from opposite direction? I have raised this point 2-3 times earlier in this forum (in other threads) but no one has commented/replied/agreed/disagreed with it.
For those who use ultra-bright lights (for whatever reason, be it visibility, making a statement, whatever) just park your car with the headlights ON and move a few metres away in the opposite direction in the other lane and look at your car's lights - it is highly probable that you will find it blinding: You cannot see the road properly, people crossing the road from front of your vehicle will appear as ghostly shadows (and this is worsened at speed or when there are no/dim streetlights). Imagine running over someone just because you could not see him (or saw him but it was too late to brake as you were too close) due to the blinding light from the opposite car. Who's to blame? The other car driver for having blindingly bright lights or you for failing to see the person crossing the road?
People, this is not some stupid rant - I face this everytime I drive at night. Many times have I considered upgrading to the brightest lamps available...but then stop short thinking that its not going to help things. Not to mention the tiring effect it has on my eyes (and in most probability everyone else's).
S = k.I^2, where S is the amount of stupidity a species possesses, I is the intelligence the species has and k is the universal constant of stupidity.
