I think that the starting 5 door hatchback model will be atleast 7 lakh. There is bound to be a premium of 80,000 Rs over the comparable Skoda model. The motto will be - "If you are happy with the engineering take Skoda;if you prefer to show off pay the premium ".

Pankaj

Now, what are you meaning by "SHOWING OFF" ... Did you know that Volkswagen is like the "MARUTI of EUROPE" ... and that the very name VOLKS=FOLKS and WAGEN=CAR stands for PEOPLE'S CAR ..

So why on earth do we pay a premium for just another people's car.(By the way, Skoda's nothing better, they have been using Octavias as taxis in Prague for one and a half decages or so ... )

Avik even though the name translates as 'peoples car' VW has moved on a fair bit up in the 'car pyramid'.

With brands like Audi/Lamborghini/Porsche/Bentley and the worlds fastest(also one of the costliest) car the Bugatti Veyron under the VW umbrella the parent company has slowly become more aspirational.

Have no doubt VW branded cars will surely sell for a premium compared to the Skoda cars.

@ BINOY:

Just by buying over great car companies like Bugatti,Audi etc doesnt justify any assumption that the parent company is any good.According to your point of view, GENERAL MOTORS should be the best company in the world, but now its suffering massive losses.

The only reason Volkswagen could buy them is beacuse they are so cheap and they are the only company to sell in large volumes to rake in all the profit. So the very fact that yyou pointed out clearly CONTRADICTS your arguement Mr Binoy.

When are car company sells the cheapest and most reasonalbe cars and rakes in the most volumes, it only goes to show that they can achieve the best cost cutting methods and its clearly says that it has no reason to be the BEST and thus, again, I point out that we should never have to pay any PREMIUM for a VW.

This is the reality, VW makes cheap, reliable and sturdy cars that are relatively efficient and there is no reason for paying any premuims for them in such a cost competeitve market like India.
And just to support my point, my unle just happend to be the Chief Engineer for the new VW plant at Chakan near Pune and he has managed to extract a estimate for the car.

Guess what, its going to have a starting price of 4.75 Lakh and will go up to 6.5 Lakh for the top end Elegance TSi engine model.

Only time will show who is right .

VW'S POLO

the only threat is it's 3 cylinder TDI  engines. i was told that, these 3 cylinder engines give better pick up and better mileage. but, seems to have more vibration. to control the vibration, it seems, they use some balancer shaft.

i was suggested that, these 3 cylinder engines needs compulsory maintenance every 5000 kms with replacement of air filters.

if not, after 1 to 1.5 lkh kms, almost the complete engine will have to be worked or will give un necessary tensions.

for sales promotion, they use to say, 10,000 kms once maintenance. but it seems, these engines should be compulsarily taken care at every 5000 kms as good as petrol versions.

accent crdi have these kind of 3 cylinder engines and have the similar problems.

can someone correct me, if i am wrong.

i heard the same for the 3 cylinder engines and are not refined.they make a lot of noise and vibration.even the engine has to be overhauled after 1 lakh kms or so.

Cheap is a subjective term. The base Polo in UK is over 10K that's almost Rs.7 lakhs. Is that cheap for India? Even in North America where VW is not very strong, their cars are at a premium over Honda and Toyota although to be fair, VW does offer more standard equipment in their cars compared to Honda and Toyota.

Considering that the base Polo is almost 7 lakhs in UK, I really hope that they can deliver the cars at the price you mentioned without taking away the stuff that makes VW, well, VW.

I just saw on the UK site that the new Polo has white instrument lighting. Why VW?!

Volkswagen has done massive advertising campaign in today’s Time of India (Bangalore). Volkswagen advertisement features in front page and last page (full) and also 5 half page advertisements (half page) on inside pages.

That’s massive!

I have not seen such large scale print advertisement spending by auto manufacturer in recent past!

It’s a clear indication that Volkswagen is now ready with mega launch of POLO ---

The advertisements are also nice and trying to create space within mindset of Indian consumer.  Have a look

Polo is good to discuss.. But we all no there is no ground for polo, punto, jazz, fabia, palio.. untill there are I-10/20, Swift, Santro etc... Common man likes the performance and price equation .. not the huge brand like GM, VW etc...

I spotted a white VW Polo in Belapur yesterday afternoon on the Palm Beach road. It was parked at a turn just before the line of restaurants start. There was one guy sitting in the car. It was totally undisguised and sported MH-14 number plates. I was negociating the turn and saw the Polo at the last minute so couldn't click pictures. The car looked really good. Typical VW. They should launch it with the 1.2 TSi motor. Hopefully, VW India will do away with the white instrument lighting they have changed over to with the new Polo for all their cars.
