Hi Abhinash,
Frankly speaking there are many routes from Pune to Goa. I will try to put a few of them used normally
1) Pune (NH4) - Kolhapur - Sankeshwar(in Karnataka) - Ajra - Amboli Ghat - Sawantwadi - Mapusa
No nonsense route and the fastest one I can say. NH4 till Sankeshwar so you can cruise 100+ till there. The ghat road is also good. I had taken this route whicle going to Goa.
2) Pune - Kolhapur - Belgaum - NH4A - Panaji
Same as option 1 above. But the ghat road section on NH4a is not very good as per my understanding
3) Pune - Kolhapur - Gaganbawda ghat - Tarele(NH17) - Sawantwadi - Mapusa
I took this route while coming back. The roads are bad in ghat section. Moreover had to cross Kolhapur city in after noon which ate up my time. Not a recommendation
4) Pune - Tamhini Ghat - Mangaon (NH17) - Chiplun - Sawantwadi - Mapusa
A road for enthusiasts. Scenic good roads with lots of twists and turns. A pure joy to ride/drive. But one problem is that being single laned, you have to be extra cautious and maintianing high speeds is a bit difficult. My recommendation only if you wanna enjoy the journey and if you dont wanna hurrry to destination.
Distance wise all are almost same. 450-470km. Time taken by route 1 should be minimum. If you drive non stop with minimal breaks you should reach within 8 hours.
As for required stuff: I dont think so you need to carry food itmes. There are plenty of options for food on the way. But better have your stomachs filled and car's petrol tank filled before you veer of the highway and venture into ghats.
The journey is more important than the end or the beginning
