Just collated the December sales figures for indian passenger vehicles, which include cars and utility vehicles. Hope this will be useful.
Tata Motors
Tata Motors' passenger vehicles, which include cars and utility vehicles, saw December sales at 9,838 units, a decline of 31%. Sales of the Indica at 6,749 units, declined by 29%, while the Indigo with sales of 1,673 units, reported a 21% growth over December 2007.
The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 1,416 units, a fall of 59%. With higher retails than offtakes this month, the system inventory has been brought to manageable levels for the last quarter, the company said in a statement.
Maruti Suzuki
Car market leader Maruti clocked 56,293 units, down 10% compared to last December’s tally of 62,515 units. It’s domestic sales were worse off — down 11% at 52,029 units.
But compared to November, the tally was up 9%. Maruti sold 47,704 cars in the domestic market in November 2008. Even in year-on-year terms, the stats were better in December despite a longish maintenance shutdown at its Gurgaon and Manesar plants. Maruti’s domestic sales were down 27% in November as compared to the year-ago month.
General Motors
Company sold 4,041 units in December, including 509 units of the Chevrolet Tavera, 867 units of the Chevy Aveo, 248 Chevrolet Optras, 2,382 Chevrolet Sparks and 35 units of the Chevrolet Captiva. Like Maruti, GM too took a maintenance shutdown in December. Yet, it’s December tally isn’t that much lower than its November 2008 sales of 4,307 units.
GM India ended calendar 08 with a 9.5% growth in sales at 65,702 units as compared to 60,032 units in 2007. In two-wheelers, however, the trend was different because the credit crunch there is an older phenomenon and the discounts and price cuts weren’t as widespread as in cars.
M&M
M&M sold a total 10,665 units in December (including exports), down 30% over the 15,316 sold the year ago. It’s year-to-date (April-December) volumes are positive at 1,57,553 units, as against 1,56,587 units in the same period last year.
Hyundai
New models, discounts and price cuts helped roll in positive growth in December to end the year on a more cheerful note. Hyundai
Motor India (HMIL) registered an overall 55.7% growth in December 2008. Domestic sales grew 19.3% and exports jumped nearly 97% over the year-ago month.
HMIL’s total sales for December 2008 stood at 38,402 units. The domestic market accounted for 15,602 units, compared to 13,078 units last December.
Hyundai’s newer models — i10 and the just-launched i20 — along with Getz and flagship Santro clocked the biggest chunk of its December sales with 37,320 units. Its Accent and Verna models together sold 1,078 units; while the Sonata Embera and Tucson sold 2 units each.
Honda Siel
Honda Siel Cars India too had a good run on a new launch. The Japanese company rode on its recently-launched new City to clock a 9% growth in December with 3,667 units as against 3,363 units sold in the year-ago period. It sold 2,972 units of the new City, 386 Civics, 171 Accords and 132 CRVs.
Skoda
Premium car maker Skoda India sold 16,188 units in calendar 2008, up 28.5% compared to 12,596 units sold in 2007. The company’s small hatch Fabia turned in sales of 6,634 units since its January 2008 launch.
