It pains me to see much better quality stuff available outside for the same cost as compared to India. Either the govt. is robbing us blind or the car manufacturers think it is ok to dupe Indians because we deserve it and know no better.

Pathetic either ways Cry

Its because of stringent import laws and value for money mentality of indians that we are barred from the niche stuff.

Most of the companies have to localise in india for reducing their costs. Take an example of pajero, it used to cost 35 lacs when it was imported as C.B.U but when H.M started manufacturing it, the cost dropped down to 20 lacs. We get the old gen pajero now and the new gen is labelled Montero which is still imported as C.B.U. It starts at 40 lacs.

May the FOURs be with you - JEEP

Gentlemen

Please DO NOT QUOTE UAE PRICES as they are the lowest (along with US) in the world due to no tax. For a better picture quote Thailand prices which are realistic to the Indian context and most of our Jap brands source their parts and to some extent the CKD cars from Thailand.

Haven't gone through the entire thread but here is my list.

1.) Suzuki Kizashi - Absence of diesel could hamper it's ability.

2.) Hyundai Genesis - Could use Sonata's diesel engine.

3.) Cadillic CTS - Again no diesel but they could use Cruze diesel unit with minor tweaks to pump it to 160-170bhp.

We get a much of makes in the US that aren't in India, though most of them are assorted brands produced by Ford and GM, along with all the Chrysler products.

After looking around a bit it sounds like ground clearance is imporant in India.

Assuming the CarWale list of what's available is fairly accurate, I think the brand Indians are most missing out on is probably Subaru.  Edmunds.com has specs on Subarus and most cars sold in the US.  It's one of the smaller Japanese makers.  It's sort of a niche car in the US.  People in the northern part of the US buy them because they're really good on snow due to the standard all wheel drive in all models.  I hear they're very popular in Australia because of their off-road capability.

Subaru offers some of its car models with extra ground clearance for off-road use.  The Subaru Impreza in Outback trim would probably be interesting to Indian buyers.  It's a compact car with all wheel drive and extra ground clearance.  Prices here for the Outback version are similar to entry level Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys.  The all wheel drive makes it a bit thirsty for fuel though.  Still, they're more efficient than all wheel drive SUVs with similar engines on the highway, and could easily beat them if they had a more economical engine.  I'm not sure if different engines are available elsewhere, but the base engine in the US is a 170 hp 2.5L petrol engine.

Your observation is spot on, due to the poor road conditions, ground clearance does have some weight age when it comes to choosing cars in India.

About  Subaru's, well we were offered a model few year back. It was branded as a Chevy and sold as the Chevy Forester.

Found very little success as it priced itself out of class, costing more than the well established home grown SUV's like the Tata Safari.
