Welcome Sri,

Here are a few general observations also..

-the models that ARE sold in India and elsewhere around the world have very different spec.

Example

-Swift has a 1.6L petrol engine-lots more aminities like more airbags/stereo(good one) and bigger wheels 15"/16"

-Innova has a 2.7 liter VVTi petrol engine!!

-Camry and Corolla is also far better speced.

-the 2009 civic that we know is allready marketed here

-but there are few rays of hope that things might be changing-Our New Honda City is not available here-the Arabs make do with the old model!

-from what i under stand the Arab does not have a domestic car industry-so there is no need of economic protecction needed as for our tata's and maruti-hence the taxes(on import) are very low and hence the dirt cheap prices!

@pankaj-most of the time i feast my eyes on the 'actual' cars here-the Yukon/Armada/Escalade etc-they are jsut jaw dropping.

How about this tactic... Take a looooong test-drive. Once you are a couple of miles away, the car's yours (pay the duty alone). LOL.

@Binoy, sorry for off-track & the joke but am relaxed / in a good mood - 'thanks to you' Smile

There is a reason why these cars have not been brought into India. Brands like Toyota and Honda - want to establish their respective brands as high-end brands. Once the brand equity of being "high quality" and "high-end" is established in any market, it is far easier to move to the lower segment. Hence the focus on the Camry and Corrola and for Honda it's the City, Civic and Accord as well as the CRV. Firms like Hyundai for the longest time entered markets as "cheap cars" - good ones but cheap and even today - despite improvements by leaps and bounds - the Hyundai image is stuck as a "cheaper alternative". This would make it tough for the bigger cars of Hyundai to sell - the Sonata is no where as popular as any of the Japanese cars although it rivals it and even exceeds it sometimes in terms of bells and whistles offered. Hyundai in the USA offers a 10 year/100000 mile - i.e. 160,000 km warranty to sell more cars as it goes upmarket. It is a tough sell. On the other hand, if Mercedes were to introduce their A-Class car - known as the Baby Benz - it would sell like hot cakes because of the Mercedes brand image. Eventually, these cars would enter the Indian market. Look at Skoda - for years in Europe it was known as a pathetic car from Eastern Europe - with their Felicty range - in India - they launched the Octavia and Superb before launching the Fabia. And the Fabia is still marketed as upper end - because Skoda here has a great image. Tata would find it tough to sell high-end cars and so would Suzuki. It is just marketing

Nice write up there Jvalant!

-i would add that even considering the higher end models-there is a wide disparity.

take for example Toyota

-Matrix

-venza

-avalon

-Tacoma/tindra

-fortuner/RAV4/highlander

-Landcruiser

-FJ Cruiser

these are all high profile cars-offered elsewhere but not in India.

Lets not even bring Lexus into the equation.

The purpose of this thread is to highlight the cars offered elsewhere that are similar to the ones offered here-and to bring to light the options others have but we dont.

My 2 cents...

I guess it is also a question of viability here...I mean many great cars sold in developed countries can be bought by the general public, but those very cars when brought into India might not be affordable by the general Indian public.
