Guys, Greetings to all.

I am in search of a diesel car and i narrowed my search to Indica Vista TDI / Quadrajet / Swift VDi.

first two vehicles fit in my budget perfectly. Swift is turning out to be bit expensive to me. budget < Rs.500000/-

I have no idea on diesel vehicles (i use ford ikon petrol) . Please guide me in buying any of these cars

Can the people here guide me with precise mileage figures of these cars.

Looking for quick and honest replies. Thanks in Advance

@ Sudheer , the VIsta Quadrejet Aqua will suit your budget and also comes quite cheaper when compared with Swift Diesel ,  and mroeoevr u get mroe efatures like front power windows and wheel covers , fog lamps when compared with LDi of Swift , and your budget is also restrcited , i feel the Vista shud be a good buy for you! if reliability is the main concern then opt for the Swift !

Thanks Sri,

I travel a lot (in the city) approximately 1200km + per month.

So i am more concerned about mileage and maintenance costs. i heard that diesels cars need a lot of maintenance whihc inturn burns out our pockets. can you please comment on this??

Point1 : what factors / materials contribute towards the maintenance cost of a diesel car ??

Point 2 : also please give a precise figure of mileage for TDI and Quadrajet?

Guys Please help me. your Inputs adds a lot of value. Thanks every one

@ sudheer,

vista quadraget is the car to go for. it is a good car & overall a better buy when compared with the swift.

now a days diesel car are not at all heavy to maintain & are very much comparable with petrol's or marginally higher. so maintainance should not be a problem, it will be affordable.

as ur driving is more than 1200kms a month ull save a lot on fuel bills.

vista quadraget will give u mileage of around 15 in city & around 20 on highways.

rule out the tdi when u are considering the quadraget & willing to buy as quadraget is much better & a league ahead.

if u want more features & convinience than go with the quadraget aura & are on a budget roll & want to save than  the quadraget aqua.

if u have a family of 5 & want a comfortable & spacious car than vista is very good at it & u have to initially pay less also as compared to swift's price & get much more than the swift.

Maintenance of Diesel cars isnt as expensive as you think its just a few bukcs more than that of petrol and not more! hence a diesel car is most suitable for you!

TDi is a Turbo Engine , but quadrajet is advanced , better and more refined engine

milage of Vista in TDi is around 12 - 13 in city and 16 - 17 in highway
Vista quadrajets milage would be aprox 13 in city and 17 - 18 in highways!

'maintenance'-generally means a oil and filter change(recurring costs)-regarding this the diesel engines will be more costlier compared to petrol.

The lower running costs of the diesel covers for this 'extra expenditure' in the long run.

Mileage depends upon the driving conditions (road/traffic/load/use of AC etc.) & the style (speed/use of gears, clutch, brakes etc.).  The 3 cars would generally give mileage as under...

  • Vista TDi: 15/16 in city & 19/20 on highway.
  • Vista QJD: 16/17 in city & 20/21 on highway.
  • Swift VDi: 17/18 in city & 21/22 on highway.

Sudheer, I used Indica for almost 3 years and I can tell you the service cost, regular service of Indica Diesel was around 1900/- in which I was replacing engine oil/filters regularly (every 5000 kms).

People dont change when you tell them that there is a Better option... They change when they realise that there is No Other Option..

The cost of comparison taken below is for Tata’s TDi & Petrol cars…

Total cost of Oil change in Petrol would be less by approx. Rs.250-300/-, as it requires 4/5 litres against Diesel’s requirement of 5/6 litres – otherwise, the Oil price/rate for both are almost at par.

Fuel filter for Petrol would cost Rs.400-450/- against Diesel’s Rs.150-200/-.  Air Filter for both would cost Rs.300/- or so.

Oil change in both Petrol & Diesel is required/recommended at every 10000 kms [except the first change at 1000 kms (or so) in Petrol & 5000 kms in Diesel].

Fuel Filter needs to be changed with every Oil change (at 10000 kms). Air Filter is required to be changed at every 30/40K in Petrol & Diesel both.

The cost of servicing at every 10000 kms (with Oil & Fuel Filter change) for Petrol & Diesel amounts to same – not exceeding Rs.2000/-.

Every 10000 kms, wheel balancing & alignment are required/recommended.  The total cost for the same would work out to Rs.350-400/- (Petrol or Diesel).

Servicing is otherwise required at every 5000 kms – the cost for the same would amount to less than Rs.500/- (Petrol & Diesel, both).

Though the maintenance & service cost of Petrol & Diesel (same manufacturer) is almost same due to similar cost of spares & repairs, the total maintenance cost of Diesel in long run would work-out to a little more than Petrol, say by 10%.

These days Diesel engine is very refined & virtually as good as Petrol engine.  Therefore, as such, no special maintenance tips required for the same.  Driving style in the both is, however, different due difference in pick-up/acceleration etc.
