I am a businessman and I travel a lot (about 500 km a day) all over India including Metros/NH'/SH' and rural areas. Presently I am using hired taxis. Now i am looking to buy a car (a suv/sedan or utility vehicle) which will be ideal for long distance/night travel and will also provide enough security, comfort, looks and value for money. I should be able to repair the car all over India, in case of any break down. My budget is flexible between 8 to 18 Lakhs. Please guide as to which vehicle will be suitable for me?

Lol 500 kms a day?? do  you drive the whole day or what??

ok anyways jokes apart, i would prefer you to go for the Innova V Diesel  , the outlander would have been betetr but it costs well above 20 lakhs! in Sedan you can for Optra Magnum DIesel LT or the Hyundai Sonata Embera Diesel!

Cheers,
Sri

Innova is very good but is basically required for big family/no. of people travelling.  If that is the case, just go for Innova - else, I would recommend Magnum Diesel.

see the Sedan Diesels will give you better milage say the Optra magnum diesel will give 17 - 18 in highways ,whereas Innova diesel will give 13 - 15 in highways! well the Innova will be comfortable since you will drive 500 kms! optra seat is not as high a MUV as u know , any sedan wont be like that , think and decide!

I would recommend a SUV over a sedan-also consider the Tata Safari/Ford Endeavor or even the Captiva-a good compromise would be the Innova as Sri and Pankaj has suggested-as reliability would be a quite good with Toyota.

Well, in that case, highlighted by Binoy (I had missed that); I would second the choice of Safari & Innova as a second choice.

You could consider between the top-end versions of the two (ex-showroom price, Mumbai)…

  • Safari 4x4 VX DiCOR VTT (Rs.12.15 lac) has 2179 CC engine that delivers 140ps of power @ 4000prm & 320nm of torque @ 1700rpm.

  • Innova V – 7 Seater (Rs.11.59 lac) & 8 Seater (Rs.11.63 lac) have 2494 CC engine that deliver 102ps of power @ 5600rpm & 200nm of torque @ 1400rpm.

Innova 7 & 8 seaters are otherwise identical in all respects (including interiors/ features).

Overall performance of Safari is better than Innova’s – more so, because Safari’s a 4-wheel drive.  Mileage of both will be same - 15/17 on highway (& 11/12 in city).

Both are fully loaded & have safety features of ABS & Airbags.  But all in all, Safari has better comfort, exteriors, interiors, & safety features – have a look at this comparison/link.

I think w.r.t your specifications it is better if you buy a Scorpio or a Captiva.

As you have mentioned that your travel includes the rural roads; it's better with Scorpio or Captiva, because both of these vehicles have the more road gaps which is very much helpful in our known Indian rural roads as well as State Highways.

Both of these cars come within your range. Both of the cars offer good mileage and they are repairable all over the country. Both have good looks with a decent safety features. Hence I strongly recommend both of these cars.

Okay, but only if the usage is more in rural areas.

Here, as I understand & assume from the asker's post, the usage will be in Metros, National Highways, State Highways & rural areas (the order in which it is stated).
