Hi, I have a technical question regarding four wheeler vehicle engine, to be specific about Tata sumo Victa. Its been around 2 years I am using the vehicle. I have been getting the vehicle serviced from time to time. Now my question is if I happen to not change the engine oil for quite a time say 6 monts to a year, does that harm the engine. I mean to say would the engine develop a crack or some sort of. Please guide me in this regard technically. I will be greatful for your guided help. Thanks & regards Anand

Dear Anand,

Yes, its quite necessary to change the engine oil at recommended time. Engine oil plays a very critical role in engine. As you must be knowing engine has many small-big components like gears, springs, shafts etc. All these components work at very high frequency and all this produces heat as well as wear and tear. Consider one thing here, if these components don't have lubrication and coolant for merely an hour or so, a severe damage can be reported. Now engine oil plays a role of lubricator and coolant here. Engine oil has very high viscosity that enables good lubrication and since its a liquid it also keeps the parts cool. Now as time passes, engine oil looses its viscosity and it starts to vanish in quantity too. At some point of time the viscosity goes below than required and engine oil no longer does what it is supposed to do. Now if you don't change engine oil, consider you are going to damage something inside the engine which is going to cost you much more than you could have invested in engine oil.

In nutshell, one should change the engine oil as per the manufacturer, mechanic or workshop's recommendation.

Hi, I would like to ask one more qustion. What if he vehicle is not serviced for a longer period, does that matter. I mean to say I have done the 1st,2nd, 4th service except the 3rd and 5th service were not done. I had sent the vehicle for servicing the previous day and the engine developed a crack the next day while on journey towards pune. The vehicle had been de-carbonized on the previous day servicing. So my question is does this leads to a problem towards engine damage(crack - head and block). Also if the 3rd and the 5th manufacturers service is not done, does the warranty get void. Please guide and advice me on the above issue. I will be greatful and feel greatly obliged for your valuable guidance Thanking you Anand

Dear Anand,

Irregular servicing won't crack the head in any case, however if your car completely run out of engine oil, there are chances that you damage block very badly. We don't think this is due to irregular servicing, however we cannot comment on actual damage-reason either. In any case, there are chances that your car's warranty is voided due to irregular servicing. You should consult your dealer for any possibilities.
