Hi guys,

I'm going for a new Hyndai i10 within a week and planning to get an awesome audio installed. My budget is around 40 K.

I'm looking at Pioneer Head Unit, JBL speakers (front and rear) , JBL amp and a SUB.

Could you all plz suggest me any better combinations or better brands?

Appreciate if someone cud help with the kind of speakers(6x9/6x9 1/2 , the wattage) and The amplifier(2/4channel,ClassA/B/C) that i shud go for...

Is Sub Woofer really necessary for a hatchback car??

Thanks

Hi! Ravi,

You haven't mentioned a budget but here's what I can suggest.

Pioneer Head Unit -

Model Number DEH-3050UB (Direct USB on Faceplate)

Model Number DEH-P4050UB

Model Number DEH-P5050UB

JBL Speakers -

Component (for Front) - GT5-650C (Rs.5000) else

GTO-607 (Rs.6500)

Alternately Coaxial (for Front) - Opt for Pioneer either TS-G1641R or

TS-A1672S / TS-A1682S

The TS-A1672S / TS-A1682S could also be used for the Rear In-Door option if no parcel tray mounting is preferred. Rear Ovals could be Pioneer 6x9 - TS-A6992S / TS-A6982S. Get a 4 Ch Amp (I would buy Pioneer GM-6300F  that can feed the Components and the Sub. Opt for a 8" Sub as 10" and 12" seem too big for the i10. Polk makes a good 8" Sub but expensive. You could go for a cheaper Sub but have it much bigger.

So sorry I did not see your budget in my earlier post. For your budget you can make the i10 rock. Let me work this out for you by tomorrow. Incidentally I have an i10 too and have a great system in place but I bought most of my stuff from Singapore as I made a trip there recently. I am using Eclipse but Eclipse is too expensive here in India. All I can say is go for Components in Front, Ovals at the Rear and a decent Sub. Should post by tomorrow...

As promised, here’s a configuration that I would like to suggest for the i10. Going by the concept that we stick to products manufactured by one Company (except the Subwoofer), here are the options –

Head Units

As suggested earlier – and you can add DEH-P6050UB to the options, which is at the top of the range.

Front

Component » TS-C160R (Kevlar) or TS-C1625 (last option would be TS-C1653) but preferably buy the Kevlar TS-C160R – very nice and tough pair.

Rear – (Parcel Tray Mounted)

As suggested earlier » TS-A6992S or TS-A6982S (Oval – 6x9)

Amplifier

Either GM-6300F or GM-4300F. Buy a 4-Ch Bridgeable Amp such as these two models so that you can use it to power the Front Components and the Subwoofer. If you would like to add additional power to the rear speakers also, then you would need another Amp (2-Ch) such as the GM-5300T or the GM-3300T along with the above two options.

Subwoofer

Most Subs available here are 12” in size – a tad bit too big for the i10. 10” Pioneer Subs are available but are quite rare. Hence the alternative for the same would be to go in for a Polk Audio 8” Sub (model number - db804), which would be enough to boom you without being too large.

Do not forget to buy the <

Do not forget to buy the CD-SR100 - Steering Remote controller for head units. It’s a cool add-on.

All the above products (except Sub) are manufactured by Pioneer.

Approx Cost (Grey Market)

Head Unit – 6000

Component Speakers – 7000 (Kevlar)

Rear Oval Speakers - 3000

Subwoofer – 3500 (Polk)

Amplifier – 5500 (4-Ch)

Rear (Oval) Speakers Mounting Board - 500

Subwoofer Enclosure Box – 500

Wiring – 1500

Labour – 1500

Steering Remote Control – 700

Hope this helps…

Thanks a lot Freddie for such a crystal clear explanation.

Just a small question  though.. are Kevlar speakers better than JBL? everyone says JBL are the best.

Personally what I feel is that the JBL range available here is quite mediocre. Sure they have some good speakers but I reckon as those are expensive they aren’t marketed here. The Pioneer Kevlar range is not only good but also built to last. I would have suggested Kevlar for the rear as well (Model No. TS-E6996 – Oval or TS-E1796 – 17” Round) but that would probably be a bit overkill. Use Kevlar where it counts – Front Components. If installed properly no Coaxial comes even close. Always remember one thing – Every Company is going to try and sell you their product and they would be foolish if they did not tout it as in amongst the best. At the end it’s your money and choice. If given a chance, try and audition the suggestions that I have put forward and judge for yourself before you take the plunge. Also, why state JBL as the best – there is a huge choice market out there – Alpine, Clarion, Sony, JVC, Panasonic, Eclipse (what I have installed) etc. and specialist companies like JBL, Polk etc. – it’s a maze. Sure someone else can perhaps suggest a better combination than what I have offered and it could even be cheaper but bear in mind the availability, cost and maintenance also. Almost all the suggestions that I have made would be available at the famous “car accessories lane” at Opera House in south Mumbai. There are other areas in Mumbai but I am aware of only the south as I stay there.

Hope this helps…

P.S. – As and when you do install your sound in the i10; do post the final configuration here, preferably with the satisfaction level achieved. If you must have another option to ease your doubts – query the Polk rates for the same configuration and then have a “dekho” at their stuff too. They do have a pumped-up Swift as a demo car. I assume you would have your basics in place when you do that – ours is an i10 and that is a Swift, plus a demo car, which must have been meticulously tuned. Contact the Polk dealer – getting his number through the ads placed in car mags like Autocar India etc.

Thanks Freddie.

Btw, I stay in Hyd.. so cannot travel up to Mumbai as of now

Today, i visited quite a famous dealer in Hyd - Sprocket... i felt he was quoting a very high price.

Pioneer HU DEH-5900 -  9990/-

JBL Front Comp 0607 - 6500/-

JBL Rear 0934 - 4950/-

JBL Amp 4 ch GTO 075 - 7990/-

JBL 12" Sub (with enclosure) - 7990/-

Wiring - 1800/-

MDF - 1200/-

All of them original with warranty

The total was coming upto 41K appr. inc installation charges n misc.. Howver therez discount and the final price is coming upto 36.5 K

I heard the demo and it was mindblowing but I felt it was overpriced?

He does not have Kevlar speakers He had Polk but they are more expensive than JBL....

(sorry! the previous post went anonymous)

-----------------------------------------------

Hi,

This is Vikramjit from New Delhi. I am alsoplanning to buy a new i10 in 1-2 weeks. I am planning for a 2-DIN system, that can play "audio cassettes". But I do not want to miss the fun with DVD. I checked on few systems with Sony and Kenwood but they give CD with Cassette. I am looking for DVD cum Cassette player.

Is there any product in market that can server my need. Or may be some enhancement tht I can attach to DVD player and occassionally run my cassettes also.

I am totally zero in all this, so rely totally on you guys to help me out.

Please suggest something
