Definition of various car segments?

Hi all,

I am a newbe when it comes to automobiles.

Can someone tell me what is the difference between various car segments like A, B, C etc.,

i dont knwo the exact technical detaisl but I knwo that these denote the segment of a car based on its size (mainly the length) A typical small car (800, alto nano etc.) would be A segment. Slightly bigger hatch backs like Swift, U-VA, getz and fabia etc. are B segment and normal sedans like fiesta, city SX4 fall in C segment. Even bigger cars like honda accord, hyundai elantra etc. fall under the D segment

By the way, car segments are more popularly known by names, viz. Small, Luxury, Midsize, Utility, Sports & Super Luxury.

LUXURY CARS

SUPER LUXURY CARS

MUVs and SUVs

VANS & NICHE CARS

i m doing a research in the car industry. can any one tell me on what basis is the industry segemented? i.e on what basis do we call a car small, medium or luxury?

Well its from Small to big , like A segemnt , A2 , B  ,  C and Premuim n luxury cars

in A segemnt (hatch back or small cars ) - 800, Alto, santro, Spark, WagonR n indica n i10 n etc

A2 segemnt -  Swift , Getz  Uva

B Segment - fabia , Fusion , Esteem , Dzire , indigo / marina , Logan , ikon n accent etc!

C Segment - Optra, Aveo , Fiesta , City , Verna,  Sx4 , Cedia n etc

C2 segemnt - Civic, Corolla , octavia n etc

premuim -  Laura , Accord, Sonata , camry etc

Luxury - BMW , Audis , merc's , n many more

MUV - Safari , scorpio , SUmo grande, Tavera Innova etc

Premuim MUV/ SUV -  Captiva , CRV, Tuscon , Grand Vitara etc

When a person says notchback, fastback and saloon all this leaves completely zapped.....

Can you shine light on this for me(am a complete newbie on automobiles... want to learn the max )

hatchback ( one which doesnot hav a boot ) - Alto , indica, santro , wagoNR , fabia , getz swift and many more!

Saloon ( sedan - the one which has boot ) Esteem , indigo , dzire,  fiesta, ikon , Verna, octavia, corolla etc
