Considering the " bumper-to-bumper " traffic upwards on a hill, which would be the best way out to drive, keeping in mind the load on the engine?

Should AC be turned off?

(For those from Mumbai, consider the traffic on the upward IIT slope at Powai.)

Akshay,

This is a common driving situation that we often find ourselves in. Yes, do turn the a/c off lest it shall affect the whole procedure. Shift in 1st gear and hold the clutch till you experience some movement of the car without giving much of a throttle feed. Build up some revs (~ 2500-3000rpm) and modulate the clutch pedal movement. The car should roll upwards without much of a problem. Make sure you do not over-modulate the clutch or press and de-press it a lot else it will burn the clutch and its life will be reduced. Keeping ther a/c on would sap more power from the car and you will have to dial in more rpms and as a result will have to over use the clutch to keep the car moving.

If the condition arises wherein you have to halt, then make use of the hand/emergency brake and put the car in neutral.Once you have to move again, slot in the first gear and modulate the hand brake release along with the throttle. Make sure that you do not smoke the clutch. Also make sure you do not end up having a wheel-spin!
