Filling Nitrogen in tyres instead of Air

• Is it true that filling nitrogen onto your tyres gives a smoother ride?
• Does it cause any harm to your tyre/alloy?
• Is it right that you  require a tyre pressure check done only once in 3 months or so as the air(nitrogen) leak is minimal?
• After having filled nitogen in all your tyres,in case one of those gets punctured is it ok to fill air till such time you get the time and availabilty to fill nitro?
• All the above questions are raised keeping in mind the Bridgestone 175/60R13 77H doing duty on my Santro Xing
• Cost of filling Rs.25/tyre - In Bangalore ? right?

Sorry for delayed reply, Manoj. Being a bit busy, I am finding it hard to login to forums/blog. But I am happy that there are many people like Sunil, Anurag, Vinay and others who are coming ahead and helping people out.

As far as filling Nitrogen in tyres is concerned then I must say, it's already there. Normal air contains around 80% nitrogen so why bother about filling nitrogen in tyres. It apparently doesn't have any harm apart from the price you pay for it. If it's being offered for free at some filling-station, go ahead and fill it but if it's being sold for even 10 rupees/tyre, I would say, it's not worth the price!

Filling Nitrogen in tyres has NO apparent advantage over normal compressed air! It's a marketing gimmick, ignore it. All the claims made in your question don't have any substance. Checking tyre pressure is not a pain, whatsoever, do it regularly. That's more than enough.

thanks boss for the apt reply...this question was thrown at you after a Ikon owner  whom i met at a filling station making tall claims of nitrogen giving smoother ride and all..

well...d other day .. at a pump wher Nitrogen was being offered ....i saw a HUGE line..... i thought of going der but lost my patience and got the regular air..haha..which is ofcourse 80% nitrogen..... but wat a big joke things r turning out to be...from extra premium petrols and super turbo diesels...they could hav left air alone atleast !!!!..... whatever !!!

Hello people...I searched the net and talk to some experts on the subject...I got to know that filling nitro instead of air in tyres is genrally used in racing cars, aircrafts and heavy commercial vehicles...
But it is true that the running temperatures of tyre are lower when nitrogen is filled in the this is because of the absence of the rest fo 20% which includes moisture...which heats up very quickly...the lower temperatures result in slower wearing off of the tyres...There are companies which claim that the tyre life would double but that is not true...the life increases but marginally...
also another imp point is that in case of tube less tyres nitro doesnt react with the rims...
Saying that nitro filled tyres are absolutely useless and a market gimmick...is not complete true...but a regular driver with basic expectations from his/her car...it would not be the worth...

I agree with Prabhal Khanna when he says the average Joe does not need Nitrogen in his tyres as there is not much of a difference made by putting nitrogen in the tyres.

I have driven my car in Pune with the Nitrogen filled tubes. I have experience that there you need not to check the tyre pressure every week, as it is required in case of normal air filling.The dealers claim that it lasts for 5 months which is not true but ofcourse we can enjoy driving and avoid pressure check atleast for three months. 

 

I would appreciate if anybody gives the address of Nitrogen filling stations in Delhi.
