Yup, I agree with Binoy. The modern brake system use diagonally braking system. For fail-safe braking. Shifting to lower gears is the best option. But don't switch off your engine as your steering will be locked.

Turn turning the steering with just the key inserted. The steering will lock. ;)
Did you mean "just insert the key without turning on the battery"? I my car the steering locks if the key is removed...inserting the key unlocks it...
