When is the proposed new model of Scorpio, sporting the new 2.2 Ltr engine from AVL (Austria) generating 140 bhp, due for release? They mentioned around Feb 07, however still no sign of it. Do they plan to change the interiors or exteriors too?

It's on the way. February was expected launch date which seems to be postponed by at least one month. Late March or early April should see new Scorpio.

I cannot comment on exterior/interior as of now but yes, since this engine is much smaller and lighter, Scorpio might alleviate all those rolling and handling problems up to a great extent. In nutshell, new Scorpio is expected to be much better at engine performance and highway driving.

Would you know whether an automatic transmission is on the cards too? It'd be handy to have an auto SUV in that segment.

I'm not sure if it is 140hp, though it should be possible to eke that much out of a 2.2 Diesel liter motor with a DOHC head and some intelligent software. Much better at least compared to the existing 2.6liter pushrod CRDi, which is actually surprisingly refined. M&M will launch this in international markets first. Look for news on their vehicles in South Africa, for e.g. They need this new engine since it conforms to the latest EU norms to continue sales in Russia/ Italy/ Greece, etc.

Any fresh updates? Mahindras dont seem to be disclosing anything... yet. Thanks guys, yes I am sure it would come after the Logan, and that too after the budget - but am itching to know more. Couldnt find much on the south african sites on the upcoming model. one interesting site I came across was www.motoring.co.za - they speak highly of scorpio there - given its price segment. Is an automatic in the pipeline - considering more and more people in India have started accepting automatic transmissions as the way to go?

Indian people are accepting automatic transmission but the number is very low. Low enough to make Mahindra think about it in very near future. It's very unlikely that you get an automatic gearbox as of now. However, the maximum you can expect from Mahindra is to provide an automatic Scorpio on demand just like the 4x4 version. Mahindra provides four-wheel-drive Scoprio on request with a waiting period of 2-3 months.

Any further updates? Does any one know if M&M have declared any dates for release?

Surprisingly AVL - Austria is also developing the technology for engines for TATA SAFARI DICOR 2.2 ltr, and the launches for both are delayed which is understandable as its only the engine which is changing in both and not the base design.

Seems like they are having some problems in this performance engine.

Engines are rarely designed completely ground up. Typically many parts are retained because it reduces time to market significantly. Even though both Tata's and M&M are at AVL's doors and might even bump into each other there, AVL is probably working on different blocks and heads and performance requirements for these two Cos' from India. Even a decision to go for a 2.2lit engine would have come from a presumption or the availability of a near-ready block design. Figures like 140hp, etc are notional i.e. they can only speculate that this is a possible figure. No proof till the engine is made and tested. Given the number of parameters that can affect the output of a completely stable engine design (diesel-air volume, valve timings, etc), one can only imagine how many more permutations and combinations they must be working with for a prototype.

Don't hold your breath waiting for these launches. If you need the Scorpio,  you might as well go book it now.

Yeah! people wanting to buy Scorpio/Safari should not wait as there is no official word from both manufacturers on the new 2.2 ltr engine and launch dates have already fallen flat for over many months now for both.

Although they are using the same block and AVL's help and Mahindra going for BOSH for its fuel pump and assembly wherein TATA going for DELPHI for the same, shouldnt these factors speed up things than delaying them ???, not surprisingly knowing them.

Happy speculations till we hear from them directly.
