Speed Limit for new car

Hi All,

I got a new SWIFT on wednesday. I would like to know if there are any speed limits

for the new car till first service / few kms. I checked with the sales person and he said

there are no restictions like that. Please advice.

keep speed limit less than 60km/hr upto 1000KMS and RPM less than 2k.

I got my Estilo last week and I needed to do a Mumbai-Nashik-Mumbai run the next day. The dealer told me to restrict speed to 70 kmph till the first service.

I guess the Swift should be given a max limit of at least 70 kmph if not more. If you don't get an authoritative reply then stick to 70 kmph as your limit.

hardly anything done in first service in new k-series engine. its just inspection, no engine oil change in first service. See this thread

well my swift was just 500km at the time of first serve rice, and service manager told me still you keep it under 60kmph till 1000km

Sorry about the confusion between 1st service and 1000 km. You are right about that Marshal. I used the term rather loosely since Maruti says first service at 1 month or 1000 km.

Also I preferred to use the trem 1st service because you can always get an update from the service centre about what speed limit you can now use.

I have done 6700kms on my Swift. I still maintain a maximum of 65 kmph.

I have done first service at 1341kms and second at 5200kms.

My car is just 7 months and 14 days old. But i still love to drive her...

Till the first 1000 kms maintain your speed strictly below 70kmph if you want the engine to be maintainance free in the long run.

Alex, try driving your car in the top gear and stay under 2000 rpm. It is not the speed which matters. The rpm of your engine is really what matters the most.

You can do a 70kmph in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear but finally depends on your driving style.

I feel 80kmph (after your 1000km checkpoint) would be absolutely fine within the city and on the highways as well.

Do not get into a jealous feeling if other cars go ahead of you. Let them go ahead. Your are soon going to catch up with them on the next red light.

Vineet@ : Hi Vineet firstly sry for opening this thread.... i got Alto a week back and i dont have RPM meter in my car how wud i come to know, at what RPM my car is going... i drive 55-60 at 5th gear.....

Pritpal, 55-60 in 5th gear is absolutely fine. But max speed should come down with gear -40-50 with 4th, 30-40 with third, 20-30 with second etc.

55-60 in second is a no-no,  because then the engine speed will be too much.

Hope you got the idea.

My Hyundai manual says to keep speed below 70 kmph for the first 800 kms.

Also it is very important to downshift at the correct speed. E.g. if the speed drops to 40-50 kmph, go to 4th, if it drops to 30-40 go to 3rd, etc. Never labour the engine by running it in high gear at low speeds. And my Hyundai manual also says to avoid large throttle openings when engine is at low rpm. E.g. when you are at 30 kmph in 3rd gear, do not floor the pedal. Increase speed gradually.
