Dear Ajit, Please read this discussion to understand the bhp and cc funda. In layman's language compression ratio refers to how much fuel is compressed in the combustion chamber. It has a typical formula that can't be written here. Weight to power ratio or a more commonly used term Power-to-weight-ratio are calculated to know the relationship between power and weight of car. Car with higher power-to-weight-ratio are considered better. Example would be a car with 100bhp and 1000kg weight will have 100bhp/ton power-to-weight-ratio while a car with 250bhp and 3000kg weight will have 83.3bhp/ton power-to-weight-ratio. The former car is better as it has good power considering its weight. While the later car is not better despite of the fact that it has more power.

thanks for your quick response and great information, but i still have a confusion as there is a big hype on engine CC. All parameters being same, car A with 2000 cc engine generates 100 bhp and car B with 3000 cc generates100 bhp so does it mean that car A is better than B and car B is inefficient; please clarify.

Dear Ajit, Yes, you can say so. A car engine can be considered good if it generates good power even if its capacity is less. In your example, you can consider engine B poor in a sense. Before going ahead with CC vs bhp fight, you must also consider some other parameters like turbochargers and superchargers which boost engine power like anything. So if your engine A and B both don't have a turbocharger or any similar power-increasing device, then definitely engine A is superior and engine B is inefficient and poor.
