Alloy wheels of good quality & light weight, besides looking good, will increase the mileage, improve performance & braking. Wear & tear on account of slightly better road-grip will, however, be negligible. Contrary to this, if the alloy wheels are not of good quality & weigh more than the normal ones, the mileage will reduce, and due to corrosion, if any in extreme weather, may harm car's tyres as well. By the way, Tubeless Tyres are best suited for Alloy Wheels, and visa-versa.
Regarding wheel-size, it's always best to stick to manufacturer provided wheel size (alloy or non-alloy), else tyre's profile will have to be reduced to keep the car's ground clearance intact. This is necessary to avoid problems in suspensions etc. and to maintain the ride quality. So, when wheel size is increased, it's recommended to reduce profile accordingly.
Regarding wheel balancing (when required), contrary to the general belief, it is achieved as accurately in alloy wheels as in the normal ones. Wheel balancing in Alloy Wheels, however, cost more, as weights for it are more expensive. By the way, wheel-balancing machine for Alloy Wheels is different from the one for normal wheels. |
