Dear All,
Here my emphasis is not on economy side of Diesel Vs Petrol – but on performance - in terms of pickup, speed etc.

Look at the new CRDi/MJD diesel engines and compare the Power and Torque of the same version in petrol
e.g. : Swift diesel Vs Swift petrol.

Power : 75 bhp @ 4000 rpm Vs 87 bhp @ 6000 rpm
Torque: 190 nm @ 2000 rpm Vs 113 Nm @ 4500 rpm

I heard something like the initial momentum is important in bumper-to-bumper city traffic where you break the vehicle to stop - then move 2 meters and again break to stop and again move 3 meters etc. –

The torque and power will help you to avoid frequent gear shifts and a quick penetration over the other queue companions? – but other view point is Diesel engine will take relatively more time to reach 2000 rpm while petrol will quickly reach 4500 rpm?

Can anyone share their view points on above data – and state – which car is better in City and which is better in Highway?-

Diesel is definitely better in terms of the low-end torque. Much better suited to pulling heavy loads from stand-still.

Swift Petrol has better power to weight ratio - giving better pick-up & quicker getaways through city traffic.  Swift Diesel has higher torque - giving better roll-on acceleration & driveability on highways.

Swift Petrol has better power to weight ratio
***************************
Dear Pankaj , Could you please give the exact calculation on this power to weight ratio? Wight of Swift Vdi  Vs Vxi are 1075 Vs 1000

Also in that case if there is a additional person in the swift petrol (I am taking this person’s weight as 75 kg and drivers are with same weight Smile) – then diesel is better in city also? -

Power to weight ratio = power output / curb weight.

Have a look at this thread/discussion on various aspects of the 2 cars.  It will surely help.

Thanks a lot Pankaj for sharing that  link!  Exactly the same doubts were there in my mind.

Just one more confirmation –  is that 75 BHP is the maximum power produced from a swift diesel? – Even after 4000 RPM? – or 4000 is the maximum RPM in that engine?

But as Mr. Binoy rightly mentioned in a normal scenario, we will be running 30 to 40 km/hour and accelerating to 80 to overtake other vehicles – I have never seen any Indian road where one can go 100+ km/hour for more than 5 minutes continuously!

So I am deciding on dzire zdi – there I like vertical adjustment of driver seat, steering tilt , Alloy wheel etc.

Manish, yes your run/usage merits a diesel car. For further discussion you may start a new thread in the buying section.

Jain, 4K rpm isn't max. That's the rpm the max. power is achieved at.

Totally confused Pankaj! – Can I take it in this way? – For a swift diesel – Maximum power is 75 BHP – even after 4000 RPM? So @5000 RPM what actually happens?

After 5000rpm the power would fall off(decrease) and sustained such rpms would do permanent damage to the car.
