Dear All,

I have been wanting to own a SUV since long.....but i realise that all the Honda CRVs, the Fortuners, Tuscons, Grand Vitaras of the World are all over 16-17 Lacs +....The Scorpios & Xylos do not give the same handling or looks.

I believe that for a decently priced SUV, there would be a large no of people wanting to switch over.

Cheers

Ashish

Well you already have.  Safari EX 4x4 goes for slightly less than 10 lakhs OTR, GX 4x4 for about 11 lakhs and VX 4x4 with all the bells and whistles for about 13.5.

Sure its an aged design but the new engines are really nice and powerful and the interiors have improved tremendously - in addition, you also get the benefit of all the 'hands on' testing that was done by previous owners like me  Plus this is one vehicle that you can take off the road and beat the hell out of without worrying about the cost of repairs and spares - most of the spares are economically priced (except for some big-ticket items, but those are not components that will be affected by any amount of off-road abuse).  I could buy, say, a 40 lakh Pajero (called Montero in India) but will I ever take it off-road?  Nope - not if I value my purse!

I still have mine, though.  Havent been able to find a replacement - the most logical upgrade is the Fortuner but its nearly twice the price and as I understand it a Fortuner tyre costs Rs.40k (thats ONE tyre) from Toyota!

Keep those wheels turning!

It was rumoured/said/discussed/heard that the Skoda Yeti would be launched in India and the price tag was guessed between 12-14 lakhs. Dont know what happened later.
Currently the Tata Safari seems to be the 'VFM' SUV. I second what Steeroid mentioned. A Honda CRV(and the likes) will burn a hole in your pocket should it need repairs. No wonder they are called 'Softroaders'

Safari is the only real SUV in this price range & i have heard that totally new version will be launched in near future. Its been here for long time & complete new model is required. With the help of Fiat & Rover they have now  access to better technology & design .Lets hope that Tata can translate it in reality for Indians .

All so called SUV of others are priced more than double the price they are selling it in other countries. Our duty structures also affect it. But you have rightly mentioned that we Indian need good SUV in the range of 10- 12 lacs.

In fact Tata should relaunch Sierra with off road capabilities as it fits the requirements fully.

The two door approach of the Sierra would make it highly impractical.

The Yeti from Skoda is still 'in the wings' and might land up in the price range, but calling the mini SAV an SUV would be detrimental ! Safari and the Scorpio are the real VFM SUV here.

Also its surprising how the safari design has aged over the decade of its existence-it still looks relevant and contemporary!

Heard about TATA WORLD SUV in the beggining of the year...that'll be world class SUV within 1 million rupee which'll be introduced in Eastern Europe, Australia, SE Asia, South America along with India...m not sure about the gurantee of the report since I heard it in raftaar in aaj tak.

@ Yash , lets hope that news are correct !

@ Binoy , yes Sierra two door design was not practical but at the same time i felt that it was launched ahead of the time . As a Lifestyle SUV it is more relevant today & i feel that they will surely find the buyers for it. Those who had driven it surely liked it .
