Come Auto Expo and a new colour and engine will find home in FIAT India’s top selling model – the Linea. The surprise comes in the form of a 1.6-litre Multijet Diesel engine producing 105PS – an engine that ironically doesn’t power any of the Lineas outside! But as per our sources close to FIAT, the engine is currently being tested not only in the Linea but also in the Grande Punto.

There has been a lot of commotion about both these cars being underpowered for the amount of weight they carry. The 1.6 Multijet might hence do the trick for FIAT. The Linea will also come with a new colour – the ‘cool jazz blue (shown above)’ which we have already seen on the Punto. The 1.6-litre Multijet will also be seen soon on the 2010 SX-4, with which Maruti-Suzuki aims to take on the segment leader – the Honda City.

Hi Bhardwaj,

Thats a nice scoop, actually 1.6 MJT in Linea and Punto were going around for quite some time and finally we get to see it in Auto Expo. SX4 with 1.6 is again will help in re-establishing SX4 in India, but I think it will be coming once Fiat launches 1.6 in Linea and Punto.

Well a 15PS increase in power would hardly suffice to transform the Linea. Lets wait and see how this turns out.

Silverio Bonfiglioli, chief operating officer International Operations, Fiat Group Automobiles, said that the new low-cost car would be a mass product particularly suited for the Indian market. "We are currently developing cars for various markets out which the low-budget car will be for India. Also the new variants of Grande Punto and Linea will soon be launched in the country," said Bonfiglioli.

November edition of AutoCar India has printed that Fiat is coming with a 1.4 T-Jet petrol motor making 118bhp and also confirmed that there is NO diesel 1.6 coming until the end of next year [so as to not spifflicate the sales of 1.4 T-Jet].

Wonder why we keep expecting variants that are not going to come immediately and who got confirmation to have the title of 1.6 Linea coming soon.. And then blame Fiat for not bringing models they weren't even planning for.

Good news is aspirants who'd like to buy the Linea but hesitated for lack of petrol power, now have a reason to rejoice and get their cheque books ready.

@ CarKrazy, 1.4 T-jet if it's finally coming (given we are 100% assured on Autocar) then it will make a significant dent on ANHC market. Honda for past many years is everywhere boasting about it's i-VTEC engine, but if we go by 1.4 T-jet then it's more superior as compared to i-Vtec. I wish it will start doing service in Linea soon.

But are we sure that 1.6 MJT is not coming? how much we can rely on Autocar?

Do you believe the Grand Punto, as it is, is designed to handle 105, that's lots of power for that size, needs to be supported by loads of other things for good handling and safety.

The Grande Punto comes with a 150bhp diesel engine in Europe. The TJet pumps out 120bhp over there. 105bhp will be a cakewalk for the Grande Punto.
